peacher Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 or just me? Had my red blobeye WRX SL for about 2 years and in that time I reckon I have spent about about £800 getting it resprayed at various times (bumper and bonnet after somebody drove over a wheel trim and in front of me on the motorway and it hit my car, passenger door where somebody with a towbar drove in to it while it was parked, dented it, broke the paint and drove off). To top it off was driving to work on Friday and a Chelsea Tractor in front kicked up a stone which dented and chipped a large area on my passenger front wing - great! Was hoping to save up the pennies to get it remapped but I guess it will now be another trip to the paint shop (apologies for my rant).
scoobzie Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 can say red cars m8 but scoobys in general are bad luck look at my post from the weekend i no how you feel
cullenmin Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 £800, youve been lucky there These cars are an expensive journey but theyre worth it Rich
oobster Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 I had to get the dent repair guy out 4 times on my red blobeye. I now believe that if you dont give a monkeys about something then it'll be fine, but if you do care about it then it'll get damaged.
mystery machine Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Scoobies in general seem to have flimsier bodywork and thinner paint than most other motors, as far as I can tell. E.g. a cat has repeatedly scraped my bonnet and wing, which is a new one for me. Of course, few motors would resist a prang from a towbar, but you might have gotten away with less damage from the other two incidents had you been driving something with stronger panels and thicker paint. The price we pay for unbridled driving pleasure, eh?
colzo Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 In my younger days I had a red Escort XR3i (oh they were the days!) which got wrote off 3 days after I bought it so I've stayed away from red cars from there on! I would agree with the Subaru paint work being of really poor quality and will chip and scratch very easily. Oobster is right if you care about something is seems to get damaged, though not by yourself.
scouk Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Statistically, red cars are the safest! No really.. apparently they are less likely to be involved in accidents.. Part of the reason is that the colour stands out and other road users see them sooner than other colours.. Also red beign a warning colour in this country an red being a "sharp" colour compared to say blue which is a soft colour, it stands out more compared to the background and we take notice of them.. Grey / silver cars are deadly in bad weather.. particularly when the bloody drivers don't use their headlights In saying that, I've had my car in bits way too many times this year.. No dings or anythign but hitting deer, falling off rolling roads, broken springs e.t.c. Been a bugger!.. But in saying that, lucky because not much damage each time.. All repairable at little or no cost.. So erm.. Unlucky events, but lucky outcomes.. Keeps bouncing back stonger than before!. Would prefer to avoid the bad stuff next year though.....
peacher Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 Reading everyones posts has made me feel better and that it is maybe not just me (I actually seem to have come off better than a few people). Is funny that a few people have mentioned flimsy bodywork and thinner paint as I was wondering if this was the case (the paint certainly seems to chip more easily than other cars I have had with the exception of my AX GT). At the end of the day, I suppose Subarus are expensive cars to own and run. I think I just need to worry less about the chips on the paint and enjoy driving it more!!
scouk Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Is funny that a few people have mentioned flimsy bodywork and thinner paint as I was wondering if this was the case (the paint certainly seems to chip more easily than other cars I have had with the exception of my AX GT). It's all in the aid of saving weight... Compared to other 4 door saloons of the same sort of age, the Impreza is comparibly light despite the AWD! and turbos and intercoolers and stuff! THe paint on these cars is very thin but it's also very hard, so it should easily stand up to the elements.. But does chip/crack easily due to the hardness.. THe "flimsy" bodywork is not there due to cheapness but rather to keep the weight of the car down.. On pre-hatchbacks imprezas there was no door frame in order to save weight.. Nothing to do with making the car look more "sporty" and expensive! (the fact they added the frame onto the hatchback is just another spot of evidence that subarus direction has changed...

thewelsho Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Scoobies are unlucky - not just the red ones
empty_heed Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 i've never been a fan red cars, my brother had red polo he put it on it's roof in arrochar, my mates red ax head gasket went & spewed it's fluids all over the front of my car whilst i was following them. big cloud of smoke couldn't see anything & had oil all over my windscreen. another friend rolled their red landy on loch eck & finally my mates red rover coupe was written off when it got rear ended. all a couple of years ago now but all them happened in the same year. put me right off red cars
