mystery machine Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 The radiator looks the business. what the differance between 1 & one?? does it not mean the same no matter how its said or speltI'm not trying to be cheeky, but perhaps I could give you a different perspective....If, like me, your formative years were spent in a world where numbers and letters weren't normally amalgamated within a single word, it can take a few scans before the intended meaning of something like "anyone" or "m8" gets across. So it saves you a couple of keystrokes, but actually takes some of us pre-'texting revolution' dinosaurs longer to read So think of it as the "literary equivalent of a reverse-charge phone call" and you might see why it winds some folks up Having said all that, I don't think posts necessarily have to be written in the "Queen's English". I actually quite like to read posts that reflect the author's own accent, which I think can lend its own comic charm. Cannae say that text speak huz me pishin' ma keks wae laughter but, know whit a mean min?
Guest CRAIG D Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Anyone looked into upgraded radiators? Yes i think iv found a few opitions il post them up soon

Guest CRAIG D Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) I don't have a problem with local dialect, it's just text speak on the internet (and in general) that gets on my goat. My wife works in HR, she often receives application forms where people use text speak. Of course, they do not even get a reply. I rarely use a mobile phone, but when I do it takes 2.5 second longer to type "anyone" than it does "anyone". A little effort goes a long long way, and it makes the sentence so much more easier to understand A couple of the forums I frequent have the right idea, filtering text speak just like they do bad words, anyone would be (and is) ****. Sorry to the OP for my rant, it just seems to be happening more and more often on SIDC, and is spoiling this place in my opinion. And again i do agree wi you BUT am affraid in these times 9/10 people do speak text lingo. insayin that i do send alot of letters to customers and i do 100% speak as you as say queens english Its just a lazy persons thing Edited November 18, 2008 by CRAIG D
JohnSt Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Why exactly do you feel you need an uprated Rad ? I have a standard one on my car and it does all right as long as the car is moving (I have no fans installed) ---john---

JohnSt Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 It won't be lighter, in fact it'll make the car heavier as it'll take more water. My standard radiator can cool 500+ HP

mystery machine Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 My wife works in HR, she often receives application forms where people use text speak.Jings, that beggars belief...A couple of the forums I frequent have the right idea, filtering text speak just like they do bad words, anyone would be (and is) ****. I guess that would be one way of dealing with it, but it's a shame when it has to come to outright banning - there's way too much rampant banning of things nowadays, IMO I'd be more in favour of higher-profile forum guidelines as a start.
ur.a.bus Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 lol or should I say "laugh out loud" I always use proper words when texting as it's quicker to type the correct word using predictive text. However the English language has changed quite considerably over say the last 500 years, gone are the "ye olde" way of talking and in with the new. the oxford dictionary add new words every year, some of this years are, crunk.- a type of hip-hop or rap music characterized by repeated shouted catchphrases and elements typical of electronic dance music, such as prominent bass. hoody (also hoodie)•- informal a person, especially a youth, wearing a hooded top The hardest book i have ever read is "gangs of Dundee" which is written in dundonian dialect. Thir wiz aye baather wi the local guys. Wut stopped us travellin in the end wiz the taxi drevvirz – they got wehz ti wi. Naebidee waanted ti sit in the front, coz the guy kid grab ye. As soon as wi got anywahr in kir’ton “stop here a minit mate.” Ah **** dun a runner! Thatz how wi got hame in they dayz. the only bit i can add about rads is' i bought the £60 cheapo rad off ebay to keep the car running whilst i saved up £300 for the one from subaru. very impressed with the quality and came with a 12month warranty, i'm not buying the subaru part anymore steve
mystery machine Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 the English language has changed quite considerably over say the last 500 years, gone are the "ye olde" way of talking and in with the new. You're absolutely right Steve, and I for one embrace that change - new words is good [sic]. I could barely imagine a world without 'mingers', 'neds', 'chavs', 'weedgies' or 'ASBOs' (which makes it all the harder to ignore Strathcylde, I grant you ).But when it comes to text speak, I think it's fair to say that there's still a sizeable enough proportion of us for whom it's clunky at best, incomprehensible at worst - so for anyone wishing to get their message (msg?) across to a wide audience on a web forum, it's best avoided IMHO. But yeah, give it a generation or two and the OED will chock full of 'anyone', 'm8' and '4skin'... The hardest book i have ever read is "gangs of Dundee" which is written in dundonian dialect.Thir wiz aye baather wi the local guys.
