phil_g Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 I picked up a set of Cibie's from ebay for £30. A couple of quick questions, how do I wire them up and how do I adjust the spotlights. On the adjustment side of things, ok I know how to adjust up and down but left and right ? Am I correct in thinking putting washers behind the mounting bracket to adjust left to right. Also is this correct for the relay: TERMINAL 86 TO EARTH POINT OR BACK TO NEGITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 85 TO MAIN BEAM WIRE TERMINAL 87 TO EACH SPOTLIGHT TERMINAL 30 TO POSITIVE BATTERY
StewartyBoy Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 (edited) I would place a washer then a rubber shim between the bracket and the bumper to avoid damage to the bumper. When attaching or connecting wires ensure that the ground you use is removed first, rust/corrosion removed from connection and surface. Use emery or a wire brush to clean the surface. Dont want to buy spotlights and have them dim due to a bad earth. Also try and get hold of heat shrinking connections for when cutting, and then re-attaching wires. Again, keeps out moisture and gives a far superior connection. I would advise placing a fuse between them to prevent a surge if they were particularly expensive... Any problems getting hold of heat shrinking connections PM me, and I'll post you some. Edited October 25, 2008 by StewartyBoy
scouk Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 I recently got myself a set of Hella 500FF's from the US.. WIll be making up my won brackets but not to dissimilar to what you have there.. As stewartyboy suggests for hte L/R adjustment I was just goign to add spacers/washers to the brakcet to pack it out.. SHouldn't need too much adjustment.. AS for wiring, I'm trying to wire them to the existing fog light switch, as I only want them to come on with full beaam AND the fog switch is on. But kinda stuck there as I ideally need to find the signal for the High-Beam relay, which isn't in the passenger footwell where it's supposed to be (according to the technical manual)! Infact when switching to high beam I don't hear any relay click from anywhere so gawd knows how it's wired!
phil_g Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 (edited) Right fitted these lights this morning in the p***ing rain. Something looks fecked up with them, they stick out by bloody miles. I had to pack the drivers side out by 15mm to straighten them up as they pointed inwards. Anyone got any ideas whats going on with these ? On the add they stated it was "Subaru impreza classic and bug eye driving lamps" with the following pic Edited October 26, 2008 by phil_g
StewartyBoy Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Looks like the bracket must sit much deeper into the bumper mate, possibly looking for the bracket to be fitted up inside..!?!
terzo neil Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 picture from front would help are they defo for a classic, looks like for a deeper front bumper only idea is cut the bar down and reweld the bars to a shorter length
phil_g Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 (edited) Ignore the wiring, its a test fit. Edited October 26, 2008 by phil_g
terzo neil Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 dont think they are the right brackets, look home made on the welding on the bar got a picture showing the whole front of the car
phil_g Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 Im starting to think the brackets are for a bugeye bumper, as they are a lot deeper. I will get another pic of the front, when the rain stops again. Taking pics between the showers
terzo neil Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 thats what i am thinking as classic bumpers are shallow unless you can cut down the brackets and reweld them if not sell them on
StewartyBoy Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 (edited) Definately a bugeyes brackets. If you can get the brackets to me I can modify them and send them back to you. Could also adjust them so you dont have to place shims in to adjust the angle. Edited October 26, 2008 by StewartyBoy
DR Motosport Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Brackets are for a bug-eye. Make up 2 new brackets with the same 3 bumper mounting holes. Do not make it as an "L" shape, but more as a square / triangle. Cut off the bracket from the bottom of the lamps, leaving a flat back. Scoobysport used the Oscar + because they had a flat back. Open up the lamp, and drill 4 holes through the back of the lamp into the new brackets. Do it as North, South, East , West shape, so you can adjust them side to side, and up / down. Bolt lamp diectly to the new bracket, use washers for any adjustment, try without first - it won't be far away. I had a set of these 10 years ago on my first Impreza, and this is how I made them up. I'd seen the original classic Scoobysport ones, but bought my own lights and made up my own brackets. Cost me about 1/2 what they wanted to charge. David
phil_g Posted October 26, 2008 Author Posted October 26, 2008 David, By the sounds of it you might be describing something that looks like the kartboy brackets, am I correct in thinking this ?
DR Motosport Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 David,By the sounds of it you might be describing something that looks like the kartboy brackets, am I correct in thinking this ? That's similar to the brackets for the PIAA lights, hence the 12mm hole in the middle at the bottom edge. What you need it more like this. I've just very quickly altered your picture, but you need more metal in the middle to fit the lamps to. Make it from 2-3mm plate and paint it with black hammerite. David
