~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 (edited) Hot footed it down to a secret location near Greenock this morning and was met by a fine upstanding gentleman by the name of Graeme ( Pedals).......... a deeply molested MY93 WRX was sat on the pavement with the safety catch off and the trigger cocked......... Despite some appalling weather we circumnavigated the weapons chassis & bodywork to mutual satisfaction then hopped inside for some 1.4 bar action. After Lt. Pedals released the beast, the classic virgin, Cadet Shandero took over the helm and adopted the brace position before releasing the patriot within. Within a matter of metres of releasing full power the decision to purchase was made. Despite not having the burble ( equal length Gruppe S headers) the flutter from the induction/turbo/BOV was utterly intoxicating and made for a WRC-like experience...... ( if anyone can competantly explain how this noise is generated I'd love to know ? It sounds kind of like this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jEUWEsqoWz8) So the transaction was concluded after seeing a vast array of paperwork, history and manuals.......have to say that I secured the car for a very satisfactory price and still feel a tad guilty for the song that I scooped her for. However, I think Graeme is pleased that the car will stay within the brotherhood..Despite looking at lots of other cars I simply was drawn back to this monster specification and the bang per buck that it brings. Plans for the car are only cosmetic at this stage and I am more than happy with 350 / 350 for now. The engine is sublime and gearbox / clutch are strong. Expect to see The Patriot ™ being unleashed at Knockhill in the not too distant future. Cannot emphasise enough, how decent a fella Graeme is....it always inspires buying confidence when a person is genuine and not some dodgy character from Autotrader.. Lastly - thanks to each and every one of you for putting up with my incesant e-huckling and for providing sound opinions & great advice. Very much looking to dive back into Scottish Scoobies with two feet ( heel toein' of course) and contributing as much as I can once again... Cheers Cal p.s expect all manner of daft questions from me about Power FC's and Apexi AVCR's ! Edit to add pics >> and the first modification ( all the way from the village of Nurburg !) arch Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Cal Sounds like a good deal get the spec up so we can see. If you need a hand ripping the trim out and taking an angle grinder to anything not required I am up in Aberdeen sun to tue I could come down and rip it apart for you
RS Grant Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Brilliant spec and an almost perfect base to mould to your needs... I'm sure that The Patriot will serve you well. Cheers, Grant
Boyakasha Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Well done Cal, now try and hold onto this one please.
micra_wrc Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 great news Cal, that car has been well looked after and sensibly modded by its 2 previous owners. well chuffed you decided to go for Pedals car and even better that you bought a classic
bogie Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 (edited) Get some snaps up, I'm contemplating doing what you've just done. Currently have MY07 WRX Wagon PPP with a few other bits n bobs, market may be too keech now to trade her away though, I ain't giving it away. So other option is to keep current scoob for toy and get an older jaloppy for week running. Then I saw all those stunning mk2's at Perth racecourse, mmm. My wife is well peeshed listening to all this :-) Edited October 4, 2008 by bogie
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 4, 2008 Author Posted October 4, 2008 Cheers folks - this car is WAY scarier than the last two ! Putting the foot down on a bend can be a dangerous occupation when it hits full boost in the wet. God only knows what 400+ bhp is like in a classic in the wet ! I am absolutely choking to get onto KH now but shall need to be patient Tomorrow I shall give her a full scale clean & polish the nose cone Already thinking of firing on 17'' rims ( RS Grant - what make are the ones that you and John St. have ??) and me finks a titanium back box is required to harness the equal length rally rasp.......having said that I am getting some nice pops n' bangs. Hopefully get a good kip last tonight as I was like a kiddy before Christmas last night CGS
RA Dunk Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 nice one cal, glad to have somebody else up this way who likes to do something with there car other than polish the feking thing lol two trackdays comming up soon im hoping to make 1)Kames 19th oct (i think lol) 2)Knockhill 1st nov (trackscotland 4 hour session)
colin_ross Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Welcome to the fold shandyboy. I give it 2 weeks before you are exhalting the virtues of the gc8 over any other mode of transport. Now the real fun begins, phase one is surely in the pipeline. 'mon the classics!
ali37 Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Good to hear you have a scoob again. Sure you will get it in trim for the next Nordschleife roadtrip.
thefastone Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 WOOOOOO HOOOOOO another lengend driving a Classic!
WUZ Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 (turns and races for the garage door to bolt it shut and switches off the lights) - GREAT NEWS CAL! Try and stay focused on this one.................... she is a beast alright. Russell
fai17 Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Nice one Cal......this car is indeed quick as it's engine previously owned by Wilky and once resides in the Falcon..... This has had work done by Greersport and i'm sure Pedals took great care of it. Cal are you going to track this baby and maybe take it to Crail too. I'm sure Weeb crailed it but never got a really good time. Regards
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 5, 2008 Author Posted October 5, 2008 Cheers folks - she'll definately be tracked but I am not a fan of quarter miles because the hard full bore launches are a transmission killer.... Weeb definately took her to Crail and achieved 13 dead accordingly to the sticky above but Pedals reckoned he was getting low 12's too but unsure if that is 100% fact or not. I am more concerned with scalping the next car in front of me at KH Off to give her a clean after driving her up to Aberdeen. After that she'll be fired into the garage for polishing and engine bay cleaning etc etc... Cheers Cal
wilky Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 (edited) Dont put 17s on her Cal, unless they are really light, the brembos will be exceptional on 16s. The pads they take are cupra r, and go for the brembo ones from Seat as the compound is really good. Enjoy the car Callum W Edited October 5, 2008 by Wilky
RS Grant Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Cal, I've had a couple of sets of Speedlines, is it... ...those wheels you're talking about, or... ...those ones on my Blue Wagon?? The first ones are Speedline GT1 and the second set are Speedline ST2. Cheers, Grant
thewelsho Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Was jsut thinking that. Nevertheless, welcome "back". Have to say, I'm rather liking the name of your new machine "The Patriot" Splendid!

I'm sure it should get into the 12's as my totally standard car did a 13.3 and Pedal's car has more power than mine. Johnny

Enjoy the car Callum W Hey Cee Dubya - do you know what type of discs it runs too ? Think it's just running standard pads at present but they are incredible and really progressive Re : 16's - does it make a huge difference running a smaller diameter wheel ? If so, why is that ? is it down to weight essentially..... Do you also know what type of Forge BOV it was running ? I shall likely buy a replacement one soon as a precaution Thanks !

Pretty sure John St. has the same ones ? I like the ST2's though - they are nice looking indeed - very rally slag
colin_ross Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Re : 16's - does it make a huge difference running a smaller diameter wheel ? If so, why is that ? is it down to weight essentially..... Yes, and no. When it comes to wheels the 2 golden rules are to reduce unsprung weight and rotational mass. The wheels, tyres, brakes and struts i.e. everything under the suspension is referred to as unsprung weight. In essence this mass has no suspesion and must react as quickly as possible to the surface that it's trying to grip to. Rotational mass relates to the gyroscopic effect generated by a rotating wheel. Think back to first ywar physics and when you had to change the direction of a spinning wheel, it doesn't want to. Increase the mass and increase the resistance. This means heavier wheels, tyres and brake discs will resist sterring input more than lighter ones. Holy grail = as small and light as you can get away with.. I went for bigger brakes but countered with lightweight wheels.
