I'm sure it can, doesn't make it a good idea though.

I'd be looking for a fmic and saving myself a load of hassle. All in my humble opinion of course

Totally with you Colin, but im looking from a money saving point of view, hassle, yes a bit of fiddling with the right angle intake on a TD05 but its not as hard as people make out.

I stole that picture off the net,

You would need to borrow one and watch for metal to metal contact and the 90degree turbo intake as well as the hoses and pipework below the intercooler before you decide if you were brave enough.

looking at carl davey's site it looks quite straight forward but i think my car is a different version than his

all i can do is but the bits and see where it gets me eh?

Are you sure ??
I am!!
But Scoobysounds has a version 5/6 ;):P

Its just that I read a few things about retrofitting a later TMIC (including carls site) and it involved so much more than I was capable of, not being a welder :) I'd love to be able to do this stuff myself, but wouldnae risk it, having absolutely no experience with engines.

any of you guys running a night class?

So do I have a phase 1.5 or a phase 2 engine then? its a 99 wrx.

Could be either, that was at the change over mate. Easiest way to find out is look at the intake, where is your Coil pack? If its on the right hand side and your AIC is set back then you have phase 2 INLET at least!! :)

if the coil is in the middle of the engine, then its a phase 1.5

if that makes sense!!

so its a phase 1.5 cos the coil pack is in the middle? right?

which makes it more difficult to put an sti7 tmic?

Cheers, Chris.

nope thats the easy one!

The STI TMIC will fit on that engine with minimal modifications.

Your COIL PACK is NOT in the middle, its on the right hand side.

This is a Phase 1.5 engine

Ahhhhhhh...

its all clear now..

..I won't tell you what I was looking at, although you can probably guess! :D

Its not healthy for me to learn this as i'l now be planning a whole spate of mods that I can't afford.

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi Mate,

I've just had the same problem as yourself, I've got a 96 sti RA with the phase 1 engine (slanty intercooler), I didn't want to go for the fmic due to stories about pressure drop etc so went and bought a 98 v4 sti top mount, which I was told would be a nightmare to fit, but I thought fek it, I'm sure it will

wrong, absolutely no chance, unless I started cutting chunks out the bulkhead!

So I've now bit the bullet and bought a second hand HKS fmic, and it's getting fitted on monday

Not what I wanted, but with the phase 1 engine there's not really much choice
