pmacFTO Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Excuse my ignorance - the Scoob is my first AWD car so I need to know if you have to have the same stopping power on all brakes or if you can stick standard pads and discs on the rear but uprate the fronts. I am running almost 300BHP and need new fronts - what do you guys recommend as a good combo - I don't drive that hard tbh and have had the best experience with Ferrodos on my FTO with Red Stuff a close second. My car is a newage (MY03) WRX. I am not looking to move up to a big brake kit tho - just discs and pads. Also - anyone selling any locally Thanks in advance

emoe Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 your rear brakes are only doing 25-30%of your stopping power so you are fine uprating the fronts alone.
frank c Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 (edited) As mentioned above , OE front discs with something like Ferodo pads , dot 5.1 fluid and braided hoses will do. You could even add a brake stopper kit to the list. Here you go ... The rears you can leave standard Edited August 5, 2008 by Frank C
C_WRX Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Last year I needed the fronts changed on my 2004 WRX. Contacted ASPerformance, as others have noted, and ended up with OEM discs and Pagid pads, Ferrodo would have been just as good I believe. Noticed a difference in the change. Have heard a lot of people suggest dot 5 fluid and braided hoses also as a good improvement - one I'll add in the future.
irish al Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 OE Discs and Mintex 1144 pads at £90 a set. You already have braided hoses and Dot 5 brake fluid
emoe Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 (edited) Forget DOT 5 fluid!! It will absorb MUCH more water from the air than normal DOT4 and you WILL NOT SEE any difference in temps, unless youre running CERAMIC BRAKES which i HIGHLY doubt. The only reason to use DOT5 is for the Extreme heat produced with Ceramics or CONSTANT race use. Its a waste of money and youll end up changing it a lot, as the pedal will go spongy much quicker. So ill say again there IS NO DIFFERENCE in dot 4 and dot 5 that you will notice or gain from use on these cars. Edited August 1, 2008 by emoe

nanaki Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 the stop the brake cylinder moving away from the car frame under intense braking. instead of some the power you put into the pedal causing the brake cylinder to move all the force goes towards the brake calipers. similar to the brake hoses mate so that all the power goes to the caliper rather than some of the power expanding the oem hoses. ask jimser for a look under his bonnet next meet.
Gee Wr1 Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Just about to change discs & pads all round & gonna go for the performance friction disc & pad combo after reading so many good things about them. Will be adding braided hoses with them. Got oe discs + Feroddo pads just now & they do go well together just mine are very tired now & need to be changed & fancied something different.

DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid whereas DOT3, DOT4 and DOT 5.1 are polyethylene glycol based fluid. If you use DOT 5 in a system which has 3, 4 or 5.1, then a reaction is likely to occur between the two types of fluid which causes solids to form. Obviously this isn't desireable and can cause braking problems. All polyethylene glycol fluids will absorb water to an extent from the atmosphere. DOT 5 does have an advantage over 3, 4 or 5.1 in that it doesn't attract water, but it's not worth the effort to change to this type of fluid. If you're going for DOT 5 make sure it says 5.1 on the container.

If you reckon it's not needed I'll get it flushed and go back to the other stuff...but I'll get Hypertech's opinion on that too The brakes don't get a hard time particularly.
AlanG Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 I would reckon Irish Al means it's already got DOT 5.1, as it's easy for the uninitiated to assume there is only one type of DOT 5. If it is the case that it's 5.1, you don't need to do anything, unless the fluid has discoloured to a heavy golden or more worrying black colour, in which case it would be worthwhile flushing through with new fluid. DOT 5.1 is quite a clear fluid to begin with.
