little vodka goblin Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I'll remember this just in case I ever get stopped for speeding, "sorry officer it wasn't me, it must have been a passing Tornado!"

Bailey73 Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 It's not true- trust me..... Don't tell me..... ...you was the pilot and you wasn't travelling that fast. :D

Terry Butcher Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Shame the Sidewinder is an INFRARED AIR TO AIR missile, the Tornado ECM kit will not automatically lock onto a hand-held radar as the PFM would be recognised as a non-threat and also the aircraft would not likely to be flying live armed and even if it were there would not be an automatic launch capability enabled in peace time on a training exercise. The defence against radar threats is chaff not an air defence missile! Or at least it was on the Harrier up to last year. So this sounds absolute bo**ox to me.

joe_lane Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 I didn't think it was true. I do know that the sidewinder isn't something you'd use to shoot down an incoming missile. Like you say Terry, thats what the chaffs for. And to fire anything you need pilot input. Even chaff. I just thought it was amusing and made me chuckle.
tiny gsy Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Not only that, but that story has been doing the rounds about the same length of time as the two RAF pilots in the porsche with night vision goggles
