Weird Sucking Noise When I Hit Boost.

Got the newage back on Wednesday after 11weeks while Bennetts played at being an accident repair garage. Had spun the car and hit the front and rear end. So bodywork and a new prodrive backbox.

Car runs fine as it did before my bump, thing is when I accelerate hard I get a weird sucking noise only when hitting boost. Took the car to Ian Grieve and got the exhaust and turbo looked at to make sure nothing got damage when the exhaust was bent. Everything ok but they thought it was from the Intercooler/DV area, suggested the boost sensor pipe for my Defi guage.

Last night returned the pipework to standard, still making it.

Tonight stripped out the intercooler checked all the pipes all ok, refitted it checked and tightened all the clips and bolts, still making the noise.

Have checked at the intake and hose and still can see anything.

Problem is you hear nothing until boost so revving the car while under the bonnet shows nothing.

Is there anything I have missed or any suggestion on how to locate it. Was thinking of getting a length of hose and taping it to different areas of the engine bay to hear where it is louder and hopefully narrowing it down. Last resort is a RR so I can hit boost with the bonnet open.

You advice and knowledge would be much appreciated.

:P If that was the case I would be trying to fix it.

Don't you mean you wouldn't??? Anyway, be interested to see how this turns out, cause I am getting a similair condition. Just as a approach boost, I get a loud hissing/sucking sound, htne when I gear shift or lift off, it wooshes a bit like a dump valve, but as intense. It started doing that since I get it remapped with the bigger turbo, but today it was louder than usual. Dunno if this has anything to do with driving it hard last night.

Oops sorry to jump on your bandwagon Rober!

Right was out on Monday trying to detect the noise, length of garden hose, attached it to different parts of the engine but still can't find it. Have worked out it only happens at full boost. If I accelerate smoothly nothing, but under hard acceleration it comes in about 3,700 rpm all the way to redline.

Any thoughts?

Thinking the only option would be a RR.

did they change the air filter? also have you tried checking the resonator in the wing incase there is a split in it after the crash.

tbh is not somthing that you need to worry about....take it back to the stealers

fair point. just take it back to garage and say something still isn't right.

Two quick questions:

What are the benefits and dangers of doing such a thing?

Is it hard to do?

It's easy enough to do John, take off the drivers side wheel..peel back the arch lining and remove the resonator box..it helps draw in cold air from the inner wing and i think most people then fit some kinda pipe work from the front bumper to the hole that's left to insure a cold air feed.

As to the dangers with this modification, i'm not so sure.. or haven't heard of any to date..

Shot in the dark here cause you say you had exhaust damage.

Get an old rag and cover the tailpipe to create back pressure in the system and see if you've got any hissing from a gasket in one of the joints. I'm suspecting the turbo to downpipe gasket here, but it's quick and easy to do. If the system is air tight, you'll get a lot of pressure out the exhaust when you release the rag, whereas if you've got a leak, you'll hear the system hissing.

Thanks for the suggestions, will have a look and try this weekend.

If I can't find it the car is going to Hypertech next week for an ALK and Geo setup, Duncan has a pressurised smoke machine to detect any leaks in the system so hopefully get to the bottom of this.

I discovered this after the Knockhill Trackday I did.. the pipe from the turbo to intercooler had 'slipped' off at the bottom so I was loosing about 0.3bar boost pressure in the midrange and about 0.1bar at the top end. Although if you guys are checking your gauges and arent losing anything then this post is pretty pointless. :icon_butt:

Hope you get it sorted out though.

Cheers,
