paulc555 Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Hi all...... Having recently found out that the tyres on my sti track project are competition use only I now have to change them to make the car legal to test on the roads....unfortunate as the grip was something to behold.. anyway.... money being tight and all that..I have two options 1) Fit a set of Toyo t1-R...or GS-D3's which are both good ROAD tyres..... 2) Fit a budget road legal TRACK tyre Hankook etc..... Price wise they are much the same.... My questions are.... Which would provide the better grip on the odd road test and track day.... Does the compound in the track tyre make it generally last longer or shorter than a performance road tyre.... Which would you choose........ Road mileage very limited to be honest...I know I wont get the grip that I have from the tarmac rally tryes on just now..but would hate to compromise the handling to much.....so is track tyre the way to go.... Any advice my friends... thanks very much Paul

Almost a semi slick type tyre and some people don't get on with them hence you sometimes get a good deal on them 2nd hand?
thewelsho Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Cant you just take your wheels in the car and change them before taking to the track? I know its a bit of hassle and its bad enough having to do it the night before. Its either that or that trash my road tyres! I like the sound of them super-sticky semi slicks tho!
ANDYJDMSTI Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 T1-R's are what i had on mine, very good wet and dry............just ask Wilky as am sure he will vouch for their performance. A good geo setup helps too! Atleast with the T1-R's you know you can take it out for a blast whenever you feel the need as opposed to being sort of restricted with road legal track tyres.
G.Mac Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Borrow a set of wheels for the MOT Im sure someone on here has a spare set If your car was 114.3 you could have borrowed mine Graeme
RA Dunk Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 you dont live too far from knockers do you??? just buy a cheapo set of wheels and tyres which will get you to knockhill and back, dont compromise your on track grip for the sake of a few mile drive to knockhill!! if your still on subaru 4 pots the STi 16`s i have fit over them no problem, ive just taken them off my car with 4 pots fitted
gus the bus Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 (edited) Paul, You could have the 16" wheels and tyres off the legacy for £80 (with VERY good Vredstein tyres) for using on the road, MOT etc... (they are the right fitment wheels and tyres for a classic) and keep your wheels and track tyres aside for Knockhill etc.... here is a wee pic of them.............and a BIG bit cheaper than a set of tyres Edited March 7, 2008 by Gus the Bus
zeolite Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Forget using road tyres on the track mate. The difference is unbelievable. Get a set of cheap road legals for the MOT and getting to and from.
