granby Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Got myself a second hand TD05 18G turbo in excellent condition the other day (only done 3000 miles, originally supplied by Zen performance) with the intention of fitting it to my car but now i'm having second thoughts, will it be to much for my gearbox & engine or will i be OK, i just don't know what to do
leebo77 Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Reading what others have said about when WRX engines and boxes give up, I'd be reluctant to fit it. But the devil in me says 'DO IT!!!!!!!'

I have had no problems at all on my '97 Classic, which still has the original gearbox, so I would say go for it! I have been informed that the original gearboxes are good for about 340bhp (at the flywheel) before they starting lunching themselves? Martin

dunks Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 The way you drive you would have nothing to worry about id fit it if i was you with all the money you have get yourself a six speed box as well Honest me and Dazzler wont leave you too far behind
20withascooby Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 doubt htats a 18g for that price though
tony_cousins Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 (edited) Fit it mate but expect a new gearbox in the new future Many experts who i have spoken to in the last few weeks say the new age gearbox can take 350ft torg before they are on there limit. I am doing the same but allowing for it to let go but a replacement gearbox starts from £1800 for a sti box or up to £5000 for a ppg gear set !!!!!!! But in the pursuit of power you got to give and take just remember that after 400bhp drivability suffers !!!!!!!!! Edited February 23, 2008 by Loony Toon

I was talking with Collin (owner of Waldenways) and looking over his new STI, it was out on the road on Thursday and drives very nicely. The PPP car is up and running so the conversion will be available shortly. You know you want one and as The Reginal Organiser you should be the first to get one. Bag's first ride.
dazzlers82 Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 granby just fit it mate if you dont launch it then the gearbox will prob be fine mate

Don't think thats gonna happen, 25k for the STi + at least another 2k for the recaro seats & decent wheels package, then say 2k for ppp to get it to a decent level

mikkers Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Have a cht with Mother Theresa, he has been in this situation before. He is running about 380 on a wagon, dont know what he has done internally though. If you decide to fit it and you currently have an uprated turbo already fittted i would be interested in buying it off you
turbo2000wagon Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Fit it..you know you want to! I have an 18g running 1.4 bar on my stock internal engine/gearbox 99 Turbo 2000 mapped by Simon at Jolly Green Monster with no problems. It does have a fair bit more thrust than the 16g with hardly any more lag.
