Heater Problem?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Recently iv noticed that if i sit idling (say stop at traffic lights) my heaters will start blowing cold. Dont remember it always doing this, so is this a problems, if so how would i fix it/what part is broken?

Actual water temp is stable, so dont think its the thermostat.

subaru water gauge response is the same over a great big temperature range. ie its crap.

as long as you are not missing coolant it could well be thermostat stuck open.

other possibility could be trapped air but you dont mention changing coolant recently.

Faulty water pump maybe.

Are the hoses to your radiator cold at the top and warm at the bottom ?

Also check your circlips around the hoses are tight enough. Normally 8 -10 mm wrench or a big fat flat screwdriver will do it.

Dont over tighten though - you'll know when it 'feels' right.

Pointer. Loosen circlips first to get the 'feel' then - torque them up till they feel about right.

Worked for me that is !

Could be an air lock in the pipes that feed the heater. Check and top up your header tank! and after a day or so do the same again until the level remains steady.

your coolant level might be low, if it is you have to ask why and that can sometimes be expensive

Can be the early signs of headgasket failure in my experience, the combustion gasses in the coolant cause an airlock.

Don't rely on your temp gauge it moves about 1mm between 85 and 115 degrees C also the temp sensor is in the alloy xpipe which is the first place to get starved of water.

Thanks for the replys.

Ill check out the pipes, and the hot/cold top/bottom when im next out in the car. Did have a problem with the coolant before and got it fixed (the metal pipe had corroded, got it replaced with the alloy version of it, so should corrode again(it think) )
