kulataz Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Any idea where th best place to buy sat nav is and which is best. Its for the wife as I can read a map and she does not want an expensive one. Was thinking of either the Tom tom one or the Garmin. Any thoughts? Graham
scouk Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Not sure of places to buy but I've heard halfords have offers on now and again... As for which type... My vote would be for tomtom.. I use the version for my mobile phone and cant fault it.. I've also used the proper satnav devices and found tomtom is the easiet to use.. Some other manufacturers may have other features but tomtom get the job done and done well as far as I can tell..

Basically only £15 dearer than Ebay so not worth the risk going to Ebay. Graham
marky.t.s Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 i was looking at the tomtom 1 UK and Ireland its in Argos for 129 bucks, and it can be upgraded with safety camera alerts.
st3ph3n Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 There's a good reason why the tomtom stuff is the best seller on the market. The interface is excellent, it's keenly priced, the maps are good and the speed camera databases are plentiful. I've got it installed on 2 mobiles currently, and have been using it now for a good few years.
StrikE Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I have the tomtom XL slightly wider screen [recommended] Had a golf before with built in satnav [mk5 golf] cost bloody thousands of £££££ & the tomtom is better, plus you can update the maps online AND transfer it between cars. sorted
Big Gordon Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I've got a tomtom 1 and would recommend it, very easy to use, if i can use it anyone can My mate has Ozzy Osborne and Arnie on his giving him directions, quite funny.
martin_allen Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Had an email from Amazon today and they are banging sat navs out at £79... not had a look which ones though but at least it is a reputable company. 5t.
col666 Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 Another vote here for TOMTOM, I have the 520 model which I cant fault, apart from sending me along a single track road last week near edinburgh when I knew for a fact that there was a main road straight to the place I was heading!
kulataz Posted February 4, 2008 Author Posted February 4, 2008 Thanks everyone. The general consesnus seems to be Tom Tom and that was my thoughts as well so I will just get her one of them. Cheers again Graham

I was once lead down a road (when trying to find a shell station) that Tomtom thought had a bridge or level crossing across a railway. When I came down the road I quickly realied that the only way across the railway would be to build some sort of jump or use Knight rider style boost + jump. The ramp turned out to be great fun
pmacFTO Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I have a TomTom app on my Pocket PC for years (think I got TTN2 way back when!) and the most fun is putting in a familiar journey then telling it to avoid Motorways and /or A Roads - THAT's how you find some amazing roads Not sure about all the TomTom One etc but I like the Ipaq version as it can be modified and you can add in all the custom POIs etc...(shell stations one is handy!). I assume you can do that now with the all in one units? My standard set of POIs is Shell stations, Pizza Huts, KFC and Cashlines lol Can always find food, money and petrol wherever I go
