De-tango

Over next few days plan on taking the car off the road to try out a few of the new cleaning products, and also decided at the same time the orange tint in the headlights has got to go too - aka detango'ing.

Read a few threads about how to do it, think it's something I could manage (might regret saying that!). Thing is when I ordered the PIAA indicator bulbs the guy said they were really only for the rear lights as the front headlight is sealed...this I know....but he "strongly" advised against opening the headlight unit up.

Just wondering if anyone that has done this before has had any problems after resealing (newage) ??

Loads of people have done it (myself included) and I've never heard of anyone having any sort of problems.

Go for it mate, really tidies up the front end IMO. :iagree:

Even i managed to do this so its not that hard :iagree:

use a hairdryer to soften the seal (makes much more sense than sticking it in the oven) then soften it again when putting it back together again and you will have a tight seal

Reckon I'll still do it, does help out the front a lot (no orange anywhere else on my car!!). Maybe the sales guy just has to say that so there's no come back at all from disgruntled customers who don't seal the unit back up properly. Sure I also read somewhere that someone got a Subaru dealer to do it for them when buying their car, must be okay then. Reheat and then a little mastic should easily be sufficient.

I had mine done about a year and a half ago & there has been no leakage problems. I got a member on here to do it because I wasn't very confident but after watching him I reckon I could have done it myself as it didn't look too difficult.

Did mine and Craig WRX's 300's

Should be a thread from 2006 year on how we did it. infact here it is http://forums.sidc.co.uk/index.php?showtop...&hl=detango

BUT there are a few different ways :iagree:

Just make sure the seals are well sealed with mastic once you remove the orange wedge

Great Mod

Well, car now de-tango'ed. First headlight...nightmare. Second headlight...half the time and a lot less mistakes.

After what seemed like ages, loads of swearing and a few cuts to the hand, looks much better. Just the ewather to find out if it's going to leak :banana2: :

Also spent time cleaning the car up last weekend, just an excuse to try out some nice new BF midnight sun wax, and other products, that received for Xmas - 1 mile down the road and the car was filthy again - oh well it is January after all.

Very nice - whats your next mod on the list?

Not quite a mod...but new headlight to replace the not so good one. Not that bad just not up to the standard of the second one ! ;)

Got a list of things to do, but new house on the horizon and the good lady would boot my b*#s (not litterly of course) if I spent the kinda money next needed ! Sports cat downpipe & remap, lowering springs, ARB & droplinks and 18s...eh, that's all !! :D

looks great - would like to do mine too, just nae got the balls to take the thing to bits!

Honestly lads, thought exactlly the same before I did mine.

Did get a few pointers from Russ (mako) but other than just locating

the fixtures and where to give a little tug (easy tiger :D ) all it takes is your time.

Best bit of advice is start on a fri or something so you have plenty of time - nae trying

to get the missus to the shops the same night or anything !! ;)

Ps. I opted for sitting the b.uggers in from of a convector heater rather than the oven

technique, felt it was a wee bit safer.

Had the same cautious issue too, having seen all the pics with the orange removed decided to go for it. I left loads of time so could get it done best I could. I went with the hair dryer method for heat, slower, but the oven way just doesn't seem best idea to me with all the rubber and plastic parts on it.
