Please help guys, there is a loud whining/wailing noise coming from the rear of the car when i have been on the motorway for about 10 mins. 1st i thought it was wheel bearing but the noise goes away when i turn the steering wheel any direction and i only hear it on motorway never driving in town. Mechanics said rear dif oil was dirty so they changed that but still no joy, went to bathgate from carnbroe last night and noise happened just as i got through the roadworks at harthill area but i never heard it on the way back. So do u think its rear dif? or something else? if it is dif anyone got any ideas about cost and where to get fixed? also meant to be driving to kent this fri, think its a good idea? thx for any help.

ps, car is a 03 wrx with 60k on clock.

hi mate don't think a long distance drive is good idea, defo sounds like its the diff, depends if you want new one or second hand? Its not all that hard to change yourself, just make sure to put miller oil in it think its 75w same as the gearbox. Another thing to check is rear disks and pads as sounds like it could be them?? My old wagon did that when pads were low.

Good luck!! hope its fixed soon

dont think it will be the pads as replaced them all (front and rear) during the summer time but ill go and check. i dont have ramps to get car up on so will be hard to do myself. probably be looking at new one if price is right.

ok, just checked pads and rear ones are fine, front ones look a bit worn and the brake fluid is in between max and min, could it be front pad issues and ive just picked the sound up from the wrong wheels? hmmmm i wonder  i have ebc yellow stuff pads and they had a good thrashing round knockhill among other places and when they are hot they grip like, well a grippy thing......

Ya should check your brakes if your pads are worn then it can cause a loud whine that can go away around corners ans so on.

I had that when my pads wore down, but it was at very low speed when setting off or crawling in traffic etc. Not when on the motorway.

i always thought that about brake wear as well but u never know with these cars.

i got a sound like that too was the inside faces of rear discs pooped.

I had a similar problem and it was the rear disc's that were corroded on the inside, quite an easy fix.

The whine when the brake pads are low is the rather medieval pad wear indicator. Its just a lug on the pad which makes contact with the disc when low. I just changed my pads, and its refreshing to be able to drive with no squeal.

Had the same problem once and it turned out to be a small stone about the size of a pea had managed to get inside the rear brake drum.

Worth checking all the basics first, mind you i did take it to a garage.

for future reference for anyone. the noise was caused by the back brake discs worn and not the rear dif, :o to the guys who got it correct and ta much for all the advise. ;)
