scoobytypera Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Hi guys, I have just had the worst day of my life. I have a WRX Type RA in blue, just had a full service, four brand new tyres, and a new version 6 rear wing sprayed and fitted. I went down to power engineering today to get a tune up, power test, and to get the car de-limited. Power engineering put my car on the dyno and popped the bonnet. They told me that the bottom end had gone because of the knocking sound it was making. It must have just happened, because it was alright on the way down there, and I live 80 miles away from power engineering. I need some help and advice guys please, because the rebuild will cost minimum £2500, but at the moment the car is pretty much worthless. The car is absolutely immaculate, and now looks stunning. What shall I do? Keep the car and get a rebuild? If so where to go? Or on the other hand sell the car on for about £2000 if I am lucky? Can I have some help please? Thanks
Scooby Hoo? Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Oh that is a real downer. I really feel for you. You've got to go for the rebuild, but can't advise where
prodrive tony Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Hi mate, Ive been there. After 6 months of buying I blew the engine. Get it fixed mate.....Avoid Brands Hatch garages

dazzlers82 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 i paid just over 4k mate but i had uprated pistons/conrods,flywheel,injectors,headers etc so if you want standard rebuild wont be near that
rodregos Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Sorry to hear this m8 hope u get it sorted sounds to good a car to loose.
scoobytypera Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 I herd that a rebuild should be about £2500 is this right? Also if i had the engine rebuilt, would it happen again straight afterwards? Has anyone on here had there engines rebuilt? Really would want your advice and input please. I feel gutted. When someone tells you that your pride and joy is knackered, made me fill physically sick.

Thanks hi mate sorry to hear about your car, id be gutted too, im putting mine on a dyno soon, now im abit worried, hope you get it all sorted.
Jamessti Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Sorry to hear about it . I heard rebuilds cost from £1500 depending on what needs to be changed. Could put in another engine from a V7 or later?
scoobytypera Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 If i decided to get the engine rebuilt, how would i transport the car 130 miles to API garage? Would the car be safe to drive? Or would it be totally dangerous and stupid? If i did drive the car 130 miles and took it easy not going into the turbo and sticking to 50mph all the way, would this do more damage, or would be just alright? Cheers guys
dazzlers82 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 ok right dont drive it as if the bottom end is knackered you will do more damage and api can pick your car up for a cost i dont no how much as mine was not blown when had done an if its rebuilt by a reputable company then no it should not go again if it does then it will be under warranty an also make sure you look after it run it in as per the way the engine builder recomends an it should be fine
scoobytypera Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 Thanks guys you have been really supportive and I really do appreciate all of your help. My other option was to sell the car to a big garage and trade it in for a 1.5 sport yaris which is also a nice car, but then I thought......... It's not a Scooby LOL

scoobytypera Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 Hi guys just come off the phone to API they seem really good, the price they gave me for a standard build, built from my original engine, recovery charge of £120, and VAT the total sum was £3666 Ouch. That is a lot of money.
HOL Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 I would not despair too much, there are more options available than a £3000 Plus rebuild, especially considering the age of the car. Firstly, is your car is a 'WRX' RA and not an STI RA (Does it have DCCD for instance) as this will dictate if you need an UK/WRX spec bottonm end or the stronger STI spec one. There are always people uprating their bottome ends for forged/steel ones or even 2.5 upgrades out of choice, rather then neccesity. A quick ceck on SN, will find you a couple at least that you can buy and have someone fit for you. Alternatively Essex Scooby breakers will supply and fit a second hand engine complete, out of a car they have bougth accident damaged. Admittedly this may be a risk, but the last person I suggested this to spent less than £1200, including a TDO5 upgrade on his MY95 uk car. (Dont forget you can effectively get a cheap cambelt change/service too!) He has had no problems since. OK, so £3-4K will give you peice of mind for the next 4 years, but how long are you keeping the car, and will £1k mean you can STILL keep it for two years?

The car does not have any diff controls and according to the Vin plate codes it is a WRX Type RA LTD edition. The car has the Ej20 egine 276BHP engine in there. Engine code is EJ207DW1KE.

Its a non STI, which means that you can fit any WRX or STI (effectively an upgrade) Phase 1 engine of the same type.. Should be loads of these around.
HOL Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 http://www.essexsubarubreakers.co.uk/ Essex Subaru Breakers Unit 1 Dollymans Farm Doublegate Lane Wickford Essex SS11 8UD Tel: 01268 572149 Fax: 01268 572024 Opening times: Mon to Sat: 0900hrs - 1700hrs* Sundays: Closed It wont hurt to give them a call and discus options. HOL Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 (edited) Ignore that! Edited November 1, 2007 by HOL
Jamessti Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Didn't know if this helps but just saw this on good ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Full-reconditioned-S...1QQcmdZViewItem
Dalthegooner Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Definitely go for a re-build. Plenty of excellent advice from Hol to get you sorted within budget and keep the Scooby going as well.
