corsa Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 I have an 07 Hawkeye STI and think the head unit and speakers or both or either are not the best in the world . Can anyone suggest what road i go down with an upgrade and what suggestions and costs i am looking at? Also a reputable place to carry out the work in the Glasgow region would be good. Davie.
st3ph3n Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Davie, a new headunit would be the first and cheapest suggestion. I fitted mine myself, and filled in the hole left by going from double din to single by using a forrestor pocket which matches the interior very nicely. The 06/07 interior is the same as the 05, so fitting it really is a piece of piss. You could try the headunit first and then see what you think. If it doesn't improve the quality enough then look at speakers. You're looking at about £20-30 for the price of the forrestor pocket and a Subaru to ISO wiring harness adapter (which may need a very small modification done to it to switch on the powered aerial). Then just add on the cost of a headunit. As far as sourcing a headunit - I got mine brand new off the ebay for much cheapness! Obviously if you go for a double din replacement you wont need to get the pocket. I'd gladly give you a hand with the fitting too. Next question is what you looking for in a headunit - ipod or external mp3 player capable? Bluetooth for phone hands free?

nippysweeties Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) I bought the single din pocket for '06 Impreza (may be the same as Forester). The Subaru number is SIMP316, Pocket Assy and it should cost you £25.45+VAT. You can also buy the wiring adapter from Halfords for about a tenner. Steve. Edited October 3, 2007 by nippySweeties
bennyhill Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Go to G-Tech in Bothwell, they will sort you out. Benny
thefastone Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) To be honest, there are soe very nice double din units on the market, just now And I think that if you have that space in you car, you could do very well to have a look at them, STiBandit Fitted one to his car, and I have to say that it was very nice... I wished that I could fit one to my car, but undortunitly the classics are only single DIN... As for speakers, I wouldn't know what the best choice is myself, I do tend to ask others for those opinions, but unless you are really anal aobut it , I shoun't have thought that you would NEED an amp... oobster Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 This is the setup in my car - http://www.oob315.freeserve.co.uk/ICEsetup_new_24-05-06.pdf Head unit is a bit old now, but it might give you an idea about the speakers etc.
ton246 Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 [ but undortunitly the classics are only single DIN...
coulty Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 [ but undortunitly the classics are only single DIN...My import classic came with a double DIN, but can only get radio 2 for some reason, just play cd's tho This is because jap radio is on a much smaller frequency range than us. In order for it to work you need to fit a band expander to your radio (check ebay) and although the numbers as it scans won't be correct you will then be able to pick up all the uk radio stations.
corsa Posted October 3, 2007 Author Posted October 3, 2007 And before Coulty asks its not that due to my age the hearing is going that i need a louder better quality sound system.
dougster Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) And before Coulty asks its not that due to my age the hearing is going that i need a louder better quality sound system. I have an 8 track that will play your collection of Shadows tapes. Edited October 3, 2007 by Dougster

james666 Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Davie how much are you looking to spend? cos i could come up with a good set up for you!!!!! or know a man you could speak too!!!!
colzo Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 IMO I would change the speakers 1st as these are the worst ever! I have Infinity speakers all round and have an Alpine iDA-001 HU for my iPod. You can easily fit everything yourself and if you buy speaker cable connectors, ISO connector and speaker adaptors there will be no need to drill holes or cut wires, making it perfect if you want to return to standard when selling the car. You will have to drill holes in the brackets if you get the Forester pocket but the plain black pocket fits perfect. Also DynaMat for the speakers is good idea. Fitted everything myself to a 05 STI no probs.
corsa Posted October 3, 2007 Author Posted October 3, 2007 I have been watching a lot of threads regarding ice and some folk say its the speakers and some say its the head unit!!! I am not sure what to change, as far as budjet goes i am looking for someone to give me ball park figures, i would much prefer to spend the money and have what i want rather than spend over the top on gear i dont need!!! help still required. Davie
st3ph3n Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Realistically Davie - it's both. You'll get a cracking head unit for under £150-£200 these days. Are you a radio kind of guy or CDs? I bought myself an American headunit off ebay for a lot less than a UK model and all I lost out on was the RDS functions of the station name and traffic alerts. If you get one with a proper line in for your ipod youll also get much better sound than you will with the iTrip. Then you can also get ones with proper iPod interface that lets you control it all from the headunit and just forget about the iPod itself. The speakers are mince though. They're made of papermache and matchsticks.
colzo Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 If it was a choice speakers or HU I would defo say speakers but as Stephen said you really need to change both to hear a big difference. £250-300 for alright ICE £400-500 for decent ICE. Go to Halfrauds and play about with different HUs and speakers then order them online for cheaper. Alpine and Infinity are reliable makes. Worth noting that newage Subaru speakers are mounted with 3 screws so you will have to get adaptors for ease of fitting and more upgrade options.
frazer_gallagher Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 THE NEW ALPINE RANGE IS AWESOME MY MATE RON OWNS MFY2K IN THR GORBALS 01414201123 AND HAS FITTED MY ICE IN MY 53 PLATE STI AND MY 06 SPEC D SO HE KNOWS HIS STUFF TOP BLOKE!
colzo Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 THE NEW ALPINE RANGE IS AWESOME I agree, Alpine for a HU defo.
ali37 Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Am also looking at upgrading my HU soon. Am looking at sticking with the double din unit and was thinking of the touchscreen Clarion unit that comes fitted on the RB320. Any RB320 owners got any comments? Cheapest price seen so far is £599

ed-209 Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Depending on how much you want to pay for level of quality of sound. Low end - Pioneer/Alpine/Kenwood HU with matching front speakers - £100-£300 Mid end - Nakamichi with Infinity Speakers £300-£700 High end - Multi media head unit like Nakamichi In-DV7 £900-£1300 Rainbow Speakers >£200 Genisis Amp >£500 Extreme - Ltd Edition Stuff like Kenwood 25th Anniversary XXV-05V rrp £2500 Multi Amps >£3000 Rainbow The Reference Line Speakers >£500 per set Or you can mix and match but always buy Known brands and stay away from cheap and cheerful cos it's not in the long run. if your going tonight you can see my stuff.
