st3ph3n Posted September 25, 2007 Author Posted September 25, 2007 Marty - I went asking for answers twice and came away with nothing both times, but basically it's got a LOT worse in the last 2 days and I went looking a few months ago. Before it was just notchy going into 3rd, and the vibration in 3 and 5 as described. This isn't a thread bashing greers because honestly the notchy into 3rd was one in 10 changes sort of thing, and the vibration to them sounded like it was coming from behind the dash somewhere and I just never traced it. In some ways I'm now looking for the right questions before getting to the answer as obviously something was wrong and I should have followed my instincts earlier. The car is now consigned to the driveway for the moment. If Alan's offer still stands then we'll (I mean him of course) get a look at the linkage and that will either be that, or it will confirm the box needs to be cracked open.
AlanG Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 Offer still stands though i've buggered my knee today (don't ask) and can't walk much at the moment. I'm hoping the swelling will go down in the next couple of days and will be alright for when we mentioned. I'm not convinced it's the linkage after speaking to someone else, but for all the time it takes to do it, it's worth a looksee.
drb5 Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 My gearbox worked perfectly fine, but when cruising and hitting a slight bump(classic was the joins on the Erskine Bridge), the gearlever would simply pop out of fifth. Other than that, there were no issues with finding gears or anything. Hope yer knee gets better soon bud.

Not good. Didn't sleep last night cause of it, coupled with having to get up during the night cause the wee ones got a high temp just now. I'm jiggered this mornin'

Your 'Nut' wasn't loose, I've had that gearbox in bits Alan, ease off on the grovelling to the missus and the knee will heal

drb5 Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Your 'Nut' wasn't loose, I've had that gearbox in bits Alan, ease off on the grovelling to the missus and the knee will heal That wasn't the gearbox i was talking about John.
st3ph3n Posted September 26, 2007 Author Posted September 26, 2007 Alan, you can let me know about the knee, but i'll let you get better first! Today's lunch time reading - what the hell a selector rod is. Drove my mum's 1.4 Civic today. The gearbox in it is lovely, nae clunks, nae notches, smooth throw. But the car's a bitch to heel and toe in.
st3ph3n Posted October 1, 2007 Author Posted October 1, 2007 Chaps - final question. Alan's jiggered his knee as he said so the plan to look at the linkage on Friday got shelved. Just got one more point I need to get sorted in my own head before I go and start arranging for it to get looked at. Obviously if we can pinpoint the problem then it could save me a fortune in not requiring to get the box out etc. etc. So yesterday the car was out on the McRae run, and it was the first time it had been out since tuesday. In the however many gear changes I needed during the day I only had a problem twice early doors. The problems experienced were not being able to get from 4th to 3rd, then not being able to go left then up from neutral to 1st, so had to go left and down into second, with a fair bit of resistance, which then subsequently frees everything up. After that the car ran fine. Still a wee bit clunky or notchy now and again. So here's my actual question! Obviously it's an H pattern box, but is there actually a physical plate with an H pattern on it that might have come loose that's causing the change action to be fouled? Then going back round the box again it's being knocked back in its place and everything then works again? These could well be the ramblings of a madman, but once I sort out when I need to be in the office over the next few days I'll get the car booked in somewhere for a look, so if anyone has any last thoughts please speak up!
