thewelsho Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Hi folks, looking for some guidance. I e-mailed Mr Forrester regarding some pre mapping engine upgrades and he suggested upgrading the turbo with either of the two mentioned above. I see a TD05 in the for sale section but before I buy either, I'd like to know the pros and cons of each from the infinitely more knowledgeable owner/drivers on here.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Many thanks!
coulty Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 The TD05 is a very hardy turbo and will take most abuse thrown at it. So much so it will run fine at high boost without a dump valve. Also they are cheap and easy to service. Ultimate power would be about 350bhp but only on an 'ideally perfect' setup. 330/340 is more usual. The VF34 is a ball bearing turbo very similar to power figures of the VF35 but with slightly quicker spool. I wouldn't say much more than about 370bhp out of this. It really depends on costs and how much you are willing to pay and also have you any other plans to go more power in the future. Looking forward a TD05-16g (which is what the standard TD05 is) can be converted into either an 18g or 20g. One thing to make sure is that your car will need a front entry TD05 as they were top entry as standard fit on the early cars. Hope that goes someway to helping you. Stuart

If I was goign to go further in the future, it will be quite a bit further in the future, so not relaly thinking about that. The TD05 that is for sale is a 20g from a MY02 WRX (20g: what does that mean?) but I have no idea if it is front or top entry. I suppose I had better ask. Thanks again.
the squiggle Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 20g on your 2.5 means lots of power, possibly in the 370 - 390, maybe even get 400 out of it
coulty Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 20g on your 2.5 means lots of power, possibly in the 370 - 390, maybe even get 400 out of it with quite a wad of torque too. Never realised you had a 2.5. Yea anyway the 20g WILL be front entry so no probs on your motor.

fai17 Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I don't know anyone that is running a 20G on a 2.5L WRX....but JAC has over 400bhp on his 2.0L STI.... So i think 400bhp is a real possibilty on your 2.5L WRX and maybe over that figure with faster spool up too. It's looking good John. You will also need a new Meercat Catted or Decatted snakehead too plus a CAI if you really want to.

Yeah, I know. don't have the reddies for that at present, but that's next. I suppose I will just have to be careful... Peter, what's a CAI? I'm not going to go for 400 bhp staright off, see how I get on down in the 300s, plus I have a limited budget anyway.
thewelsho Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 CAI = Cold Air Induction (kit) Doh!!! Thanks
coulty Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 You don't need a CAI to run 400bhp. In fact unless you are going FMIC then there is absolutely no point. The airbox can handle more than 450bhp and also keeps the inlet temps down very well with no chance of any MAF issues.
st3ph3n Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Will the standard 2006 WRX Intercooler handle more than 300 horses? Will John need bigger injectors too?
coulty Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 If John is Welsho then his is an sti. He will have the sti tmic and 565cc injectors which should be more than enough if he runs a higher fuel pressure but alternatively he could put 650 or 740cc injectors in it. The wrx tmic will more than cope with 300bhp in fact it would probably do more like 350-400.
fai17 Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 That right John aka Welsho will need a big fuel pump, bigger injectors and a STI TMIC if he wants near 400 jap horses.
st3ph3n Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 John's "only" got a WRX. STI replica wing etc. though.
coulty Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 That right John aka Welsho will need a big fuel pump, bigger injectors and a STI TMIC if he wants near 400 jap horses. Totally correct peter ! Might need a stronger clutch too []
jimser Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 john if your looking for a very quick spooling turbo capable of 340bhp on road fuel then i have a vf34 sitting here looking for another rocket to boost lol jim
RS Grant Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Surely the box has gotta be a concern at a sustained 320lb/ft and over... or are the current crop of 5-speeds a bit stronger than the Classic 5's were. [] Cheers, Grant
thewelsho Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 For petes sake!!! I go away for the day and all you people have been talking about me!!! Jimser: Much for the turbo? I have enquired about the TD05 in the for sale section but the guy hasn't got back to me yet. Coulty: Yes, "only" a WRX, its an actual STI wing though Stephen, NOT a replica! Cost me a grand from Subaru, silly me! Peter has sourced my downpipe: sports cat 3" modified to fit the standard bore. Can't wait!
jimser Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 john;only covered 7000 miles £450 or make me an offer jim
