D4WGY Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Hope somebody can help me out. Can somebody tell me, on the EJ20 engine, what is the belt behind the radiator that runs off three pulleys? I'm not totally clued up about the belts inside the engine but the bottom of the three pulleys running this belt keeps rattling itself off and the belt comes off as a result. I can get it back on again and tighten the pulley up using a ratchet set then I can drive the car for no more than about 20 metres and it comes off again ( As soon as it comes loose, the steering seizes and I have to just stop wherever the brakes let me. Anybody else had this problem? The car's not able to be driven a great distance and it's doing my head in! Thanks, Shep )
the squiggle Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 2 belts behind the rad are for the Alternator and Power Steering on one and the Aircon on the other. The Alternator/Power Steering is the larger of the 2. Unless of course your car does not have Aircon then the only belt you see is for the Alternator/Power Steering. The lock off for the adjustment is 90degrees from the adjusting bolt
johnnyr6 Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Is it the big pulley at the bottom? If so it sounds like the crank pulley bolt is loose (common prob on classics, dunno about newage). If it is the crank pulley your better off getting it checked out. It may just be that your not tightening it enough as it get torqued up really tight (can't remember off the top of my head but it's something like 95nm, i'm sure some one will be along shortly to correct me). If it's left slack for too long it can wear the inner side of the pulley and the woodruff key. Johnny.
D4WGY Posted July 31, 2007 Author Posted July 31, 2007 It will be the power steering belt that's gone then ( Not sure what you mean about the lock off? There's a small space in the pulley that matches up with what seems to be a pin on the area where the pulley slots? Is that the lock off mate? Thanks for the help mate, really appreciated Shep
D4WGY Posted July 31, 2007 Author Posted July 31, 2007 JohnnyR6 - That sounds about right mate. It's the big pulley at the bottom that's causing the bother. Don't think my little Draper ratchet would put enough torque on it to hold haha. I'll see if I can limp along to AWD tomorrow, it's only about half a mile along the back road. Thanks guys )
