  1. It's bank holiday time again... and as you know, bank holidays bring big discounts at Opie Oils! This weekend, we're running another offer which will bag you 15% - 30% off RRP on pretty much everything we sell. Just spend £30 or more in a single transaction before midnight on Tuesday 26th May 2009 and use offer code CARHOLIDAY at the checkout. The offer code will get you 15% off, so combine with your club forum discount of 10% - 15% to get substantial savings. Orders under £30 will still qualify for your club forum discount - remember to sign in to see your discounted prices. What's on Offer? Everything we sell, with the exception of Splitfire coilpacks, Brembo brake discs, pads & upgrade kits! So, take your pick... we've oils and lubricants from Castrol, Mobil, Fuchs, Motul, Amsoil, Redline, Silkolene plus our brand new range from Gulf, including the all new Gulf Competition range for race, track and rally - exclusively online from Opie Oils. Denso Iridium performance spark plugs and our ever-popular Trico Neoform beam blades are also included in the offer. Or if car detailing is more your thing, choose from the Meguiars, Bilt Hamber and Muc-off ranges for all you'll need to get your pride and joy looking beautiful. Don't forget we're always happy to offer advice if you're unsure as to what oil or lubricant you need. Cheers
  2. Guess the Car Competition – Answers! As many of you guessed, the answers were: • Aston Martin for the make of car (the car is the Le Mans-winning DBR9) • Gulf is the oil sponsor The winning ticket was drawn by Keith Jewers of Gulf Oil UK at Japfest on Saturday 16th… Congratulations to our winner, Mick Hall from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex! Mick wins £100 of products from across the range at Opie Oils. We ran the competition to tie in with the launch of new Gulf lubricants , including an all new range of Gulf Competition race oils, exclusively online from Opie Oils. Opie Oils played host to the remaining race DBR9 on our stand at Japfest to celebrate the Gulf launch. There's a high res A4 picture of the 009 race winning car available as a free download from our web site. We were delighted that so many of you entered the competition. We had over 1700 entries, with about 85% of you getting the right answer. From the wrong answers, Lotus (specifically the Lotus Exige) was a common guess for the car. And much as we would like to have been able to sponsor the Aston Martin DBR9, Opie Oils was not the right answer for the oil sponsor! Our favourite wrong answer? What car is shown in the photo? Bugatti Veyron (????Not a clue really best guess!) Who is the oil sponsor of the car? Opie Oils by any chance? When we’re in a position to sponsor a race-going Bugatti Veyron, we’ll crack open the champagne. You’re all invited ;-) If you would like to be amongst the first to know of future competitions, why not subscribe or bookmark our twitter page at twitter.com/opieoils ? We feel another one coming on… Til next time

  6. To kick off Opie Oils new 12 part series of interesting oil facts we thought that we would address the statement “My oil has turned to water!” Let’s be objective and look at the actual figures involved here, emotional expressions such as ‘turned to water’ just will not do. Engineering is supposed to be a science afterall! So! Almost all modern jet engines run on 5cst at 100degC synthetic ester oil. Needless to say, some bearings will actually be running at a temperature of perhaps 200degC; so the true oil viscosity in these situations is in fact 1.5cst. This is really thin, much thinner than any car or bike engine oil even in a race engine. But is it as thin as water? NO! At 20degC water has a viscosity of 1.0cst and at 50degC it drops to 0.55cst. Just for comparison, a 0w-20 oil will have an approximate viscosity of 107cst at 20degC, 32cst at 50degC, 8.9cst at 100degC and 2.3cst at 200degC. So there you go, it may look like water but it certainly isn’t! Cheers. Guy & The Opieoils.co.uk Team Note: Centistokes (cst) is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow (viscosity). It is calculated in terms of the time required for a standard quantity of fluid at a certain temperature to flow through a standard orifice. The higher the value, the more viscous the fluid.

  14. What is the technical reason given for not using synthetic for 12000 miles? Seems crazy to me when 90% of synthetics are in fact petroleum based and not synthetic (man-made) at all. I cannot see any reason why you should not switch to a synthetic as soon as possible and get the benefits especially as more than 70% of all cars worldwide now leave factories with synthetic in the sump. Cheers Simon
  15. In an 07 scoob the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 would be better than the 10w-50 unless oil temps exceed 120degC Cheers Simon
  16. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DRAGON-PERFORMANCE-M...1QQcmdZViewItem Bargain price for a 9sec car though! Cheers Simon
  17. We do not recommend oil addatives, they are already there and the quality of the addative pack generally is higher in line with the oil. Had many opportunities to sell them but just not interested as I've yet to read a decent chemical report on one. Cheers Simon
  18. Unless the car is extremely modded, a 5w-40 is what we recommend for post 2000 scoobs. Modifications can mean the requirement for heavier oils especially if they are tracked in which case we recommend a 10w-50 or 15w-50. Cheers Simon
