Ah, maybe you are thinking about my MY03 WRX which was sold a few months back. I went and bought an older bugeye Sti the other week......
-
Bit late for next weekends trackday but I would recommend you fit an oil cooler if regularly racing the car round Knockhill with this sort of power. Either that or limit it to say 5 lap stints with a cool down period in between.
Andy
-
Er, excuse me ! Std Sti [] Its even the basic model with none of the performance enhancements such as elec windows etc []
No I will not be out, I have not done anything to it, no idea what brake pads are in it or what oil etc, don't intend taking it out until its er, had some attention....... just to ensure its totally std you understand []
-
It is still running fine at the moment on normal boost but is losing a little water when thrashed hard so Simon wants to pull it out to check it before anything untoward happens. I think he is really just looking for an excuse to further upgrade []
The WRX has different pistons/heads/cams/compression ratio etc so you can't really compare cylinder loadings directly with the Sti.

I think there is a little bit more 'satisfaction' to come from this one once the OE centre exhaust section is changed
Andy
-
Er, not unless you want to come and help me move house I'm afraid !
Should be contactable via phone though (for a change !)
Andy
-
Is it a head gasket starting to go as you first thought Simon ?
Interested to keep tabs on the first parts to 'creak' under decent power on the later WRX's

You need to know the boost profile your engine has been mapped to, then replicate it with the AVC-R. This however will give you no gains over the original map as you will just achieve the same level.
Ideally it needs to be mapped to benefit from the extra features within the AVC-R such as per-gear boost control and adjustable feedback loop speed. Not really a DIY task on your spec of engine in my opinion.

210.2 mph at Elvington and in absolutely no rush to do it ever again !

True [] that was a quick car by the way ! Or at least it seemed like it at the time !

Guilty [] Falkland bought that car and still use it I believe.

When testing guys, be prepared for some variation in result depending upon which gear you are testing in, three main reasons for this 1- ECU acceleration/pressurisation rate fuel enrichment 2 -The effect of acceleration G force on the fuel supply to the FP reg and 3 - The airflow speed/pressure into the airbox or across the filter.

I know exactly how much difference the resonator delete makes to the AFR on the MY97/00 on the road and from an AFR viewpoint it is safe to remove it, you will gain flow potential at higher rpm. The turbo boost pressure control however may be influenced by the increased flow so it would be wise to check the boost before/after.
As for how much difference it makes on the rollers with the different airflow pattern you get under these false conditions I don't know and don't really care to be honest, I don't map them to stand still and push a roller round.

in your 30 years how many years u been dealing with plug and play type stuff???
Approx 10 yrs, my cossy was probably the first serious turbo car I done, I didn't have ECU access initially but tweeked things like fuel pressure, injectors, moving crank pick ups and porting turbos and modified boost control manually etc. Seemed to work ok as it won the 95 Scottish saloon car championship at Knockhill with 14 wins out of 15 races []

A bit of light reading here

You are where a certain Aberdeen music teacher was a few years ago, I recomended one of these books to him back then when I mapped his Impreza on an Apexi ........ now they tell me how its done []
The thing to remember is that "mapping" is simply adjusting parameters to where you want them to be, it is just a tool. A bit like the screwdriver you would use to change jets or tweek distributor springs in years gone by. You need to know what you want to adjust and why, what the effects are on the engine components such as bearings/pistons/valve temperatures/turbine speed/exhaust backpressure/charge temperature and so on. Also how to recognise when you have gone in the wrong direction or over the edge in the right direction.
Finally you need to set safety margins that you have found through experience to be appropriate to the standard of engine build and level of power produced.

I didn't mean to sound patronising Ciaran, perhaps my 30 years in the car tuning game is too long []
I tend consider it more of a trade or perhaps even an art, rather than something you just take a course in, which of course is still some way from being "god like" [:$] []
Bottom line is if you're keen enough you can do almost anything.
Mona Lisa.... I could do that []

you obviously havent seen craig yet,
lol, or those lovely little puppies he has []

"Mapper" is an awful word ! it suggests that someone just needs to know how to work a laptop and alter a map to be a mapper.
In effect you need to be a tuner, to be a tuner ideally you need to have an engineering background with sound foundations in materials, thermodynamics, mechanical and electrical engineering. A few years of 'hands on' engine specific tuning will also come in handy for when you push a key on the laptop...... and the expected doesn't happen !
It is possible to short circuit this route however if you are dedicated enough to do the considerable amount of research required and then buy a car to experiment on yourself, then build it up to be something with impressive performance and excellent reliability. Initially offer your services to friends for free and produce more machines with impressive performance and reliability. Then business will come your way.

ps, Just doing a 'course' is not the way forward

Can't help but wonder how you guys in P2, 3 & 5 know what your times are going to be in October ? [] -
Going to put the AVCR on self learn tomorrow and try adjusting the 3 & 4 gear boost which is about 1.3bar and see how it goes.
Nooooooooooo ! Stop ! Don't put it on self learn as it will learn a profile from the lower gears and then apply it to higher gears. This will give massive overboost !
If Russell has set up the gear recognition numbers then just increase the in-gear start duty cycle by a few degrees in the lower gears.
First you need to know if he has set the 5 gears to 1-5 or 2-6 ? The latter being preferable.

I can confirm Russels comments above, the T piece in question also supplies the boost gauge. Not that a hose popping off during mapping is a big issue, it happens on every 2nd car that comes in here !
AVCR remains a mystery, there were a few around with dodgy processor boards some time go but that was normally a boost control issue.
Regards the boost achieved on the rollers, this would be a midrange peak and not a held figure. The car would normally run 1.6 bar +/- 0.1 in the midrange. Some cars struggle to hit target boost on the rollers, these twin scrolls hit so fast that they can tend to overshoot a bit.
Not far from the "roaddyno" figure though Gogs []

Nice result Gordon []
The hose that came off during mapping was where the AVC-R boost take off had been 'T'd in to the dump valve control line.
The MPH input to the AVCR was reading a constant 20mph regardless of the speed the car was moving. The speed input signal to the ECU as read via the laptop and the output to the speedo display were both reading normally.
Its sorted now though []

I think this just about sums it up nicely.
you do damned good work at a fraction of what the so-called 'professionals' charge. (Professional: master: an authority qualified to teach apprentices) I'm sure the bad comments etc. are nothing but sour grapes from jealous w***ers who wish they had half your talent.Worth dwelling on what makes a "Professional" Quote - Professional: master: an authority qualified to teach apprentices
I see no mention of big workshop, employees or even a rolling road [] in fact, on a level playing field I wonder who would be the master and who would be the apprentice ?
Stick with it mate, you're doing a fine job from the cars I see here [H]
