getting a courtesy car in a wee while !!
sandyRS16i replied to bigdavie's topic in Scottish Scoobies
nothing handles like a courtesy car.......except for a hire car -
Did they tell you how loud it was? Such as measure the noise with the appropriate equipment? The vehicle noise emmissions are down to the individual testers discretion at the MOT to decide whether they deem it to be unsatisfactory or not. However, if this is going to be an issue at MOT time, then its a bit of a concern as i am currently persuing legal advice after being stopped by the Northern Constabulary for burbling too loudly in their opinion.

The reson given by the dealership is that as its a Jap import they have no chassis number on their system to match the engine details to. If it was a uk car they would have no problem with this tho. The car is total standard apart from a bailey DV and the center decat is removed. It stil has the downpipe cat. It is always run on optimax and OB every tank and i doubt if i have ever gone above 6000rpm and deffinately never even been near or at the 7600rpm redline. (not i my ownership, drive like a granny TBH) Was considering a ECU remap, but will this reduce the performance if the ignition advance is changed for cr*ppy uk fuel. I have a decat downpipe which i never fitted as i was told it would need mapped for that, would fitting that make up for amy performance deficit due to the lower RON fuel??

I have a Jap import STI V5, but the big end went on the engine, so have been told that there is damage to the block so it needs a replaced bottom end. Part of the problem is that this happened in Inverness, as such the only choice i had was a mian Subaru dealer, who although helpful said they cannot give a garuntee with the engine cos its not a uk car. The problem is they said they can supply and fit a new P1 bottom end, which is the same as my STI one. However is this going to be the best option? As i will have no garuntee i could go elsewhere for an engine, as i am reluctant to put in another engine if its prone to do this again. Would getting a 2.2 or even a 2.5 bottom end be stronger? would the turbo need changing as currently its a VF28 and will i need a different ecu? TBH i dont really ave a great deal of knowledge about subaru engines so any help would be appriciated

While i've been driving over the last few days, i have noticed that the clutch biting point is moving lower down the pedal. Twice in as many days, when in traffic, i have felt the pedal 'pop' as i though the rachet is adjusting. I know that on other cars i have the pedal rachet is self adjusting, but is this the same on subaru's? Also i have read that as they have hydraulic clutches, the spring/clip can get worn? If so how easy is this to change/fix on subaru's and where abouts do i find it or would i have to go to a dealer/mechanic? Also the clutch has started to slip, when accelerating 'hard' in 4th or 5th, the revs will rise rapidly, but the speedo doesn't could this be linked to the problems with the pedal/cable or is it likely i need to replace my clutch as well? If so what would be a good one to go for, i have a Sti V5 type RA. Any help advice would be apprciated

Its ironic that the state of Crail is so bad, afterall they ONLY charge a tenner per person to get in plus extras from track etc. Still a bit of a laugh there, but could definately do with someone who will put a bit of investment into it, afterall its a decent sized venue with plenty of potential. As for any other venue, it would be welcomed, but no matter where it is there will always be someone to object, whether its locals who live near it or those who are in places we pass through to get there........

Don,t bother buying 99RON at Tesco cos it isn't as good as it seems. They did a Rolling Road test in Performance Ford Mag last month comparing the performance of normal 95RON, BP ultimate (97RON), Shell Optimax (98RON) and tesco 99RON. The results were quite surprising, the test was done using a 500bhp cosworth where the performance of the Tesco 99RON was only marginally better than the standard 95RON fuel. The timing and the boost had to be altered and the power and torque results were way off the BP and Shell. The results were conclusive that the Shell Optimax was the best by far, giving much increased power and torque with more scope for timing advance. So IMO having read this, for the sake of a few pennies per litre, the best option is to stick with the Optimax. Dont know if anyone else on here saw the article, but deffo worth a read if you can find it.

<< Great looking car BTW... love the colour Dave >> cheers for posting the pics dave thanks for the info, will now need to decide whether i can afford a remap or just stick with it as is for the mo.....

was actually looking into getting a knocklink and an AFR meter at some point, might hold off on the decat then for a bit. what sort of boost/power increase would i be looking at with full decat? if it was remapped, would it be a case of reprogramming the current ecu or would it need replacing for a different unit, anyone know how much this would set me back??

Currently i have a standard STI (version 5) Type RA V-ltd which is running standard apart form a bailey piston dump valve and the center section cat has been removed. I have a magnex de-cat downpipe whcih i was thinking of fitting, but it has been mentioned that people have experienced engine problems and failures in STI V5's and P1's if they dont get them re-mapped. The car is still running the Jap mapped ECU and run on Optimaz and OB, will it still be ok with this if its fully decat or will i have to get it remapped. Any advice/help will be appriciated, or if anyone knows who the best people to talk to are. Was thinking of speaking to either AWD or Andy Forrest, are these the best folks?? Thanks Sandy http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/sandyRS16i/scooby2.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/sandyRS16i/scooby1.jpg

dunno if your pic does it full justice tbh. saw one on a car at stan palmer in carlise, and must say i thought it looked brill, way better than the standard STI 06 wing, maybe thats just cos its a bit different, but thats only my opinion!!!

yeah, i got done at the weekend by the inverness plod. got a £30 fine for a non standard system which exceeds "standard" manufacturer dB levels. just for info i am running a downpipe back system with ninja backbox, so still have the downpipe cat. got some spiel about the level for a scooby being only 85bd, where i was at 103.2dB this is what i posted on another forum alrighty peeps, just wondering if anyone on here has had a similar experience (would expect so) and if so know what the law is?? got stopped last night in my subaru by the cops because of my exhaust. i know its louder than standard, thats why i bought it. however, i have a downpipe back system , which as sold has BS certification and EU certification, hence i thought it was legal. i was told it is too loud, and was give a fine. this is what worries me tho, the wording used on the paperwork is that i have a louder and non standard exhaust fitted to my car. this should worry all of us, as i also own an RS1600i and know for a fact that the standard exhaust is no longer produced, and am sure a lot of old skool guys are in the same situation, So are we all breaking the law?? the other concern is what the cops DIDNT do when the stopped me 1. breathalyse me 2. Ask me to produce documents at a police station 3. Check my vehicle for defects 4. Do an emmisions test 5. Did not ask me to go to an MOT station to prove any changes back to standard have been done What they did do 1. stand about 1ft from my exhauts then rev the car at 2000 and 4000 rpm. my reading was 103.2dB What i want to know is what is the legal limit, and if this exceeds it with my exhaust fitted as BS and EU certified then how is this so?? The final thing i was told was that it is "advisable" to put on my standard system if i have it, if not i will be running the risk of being fined again.....so is this all a money making exercise, as there is no requirement for me to prove this?? i know this is a bit of a long thread, maybe even a rant, but if anyone know the answers to the questions then a lot of us may benefit. there have been a few replies, but the consensus is that there is no definitive guide as to whether change you exhaust is illegal unless it fails emissions, maybe someone on here who is more informed will know more about it. but it seems to be that this is all down to the descression of the plod in whatever area, as to what they believe is excessive. important thing is by the fact that legally i do not have to change the zorst, it doesnt have to get retested at an MOT station, then this can only be seen as a way of increasing the coffers for the plod. so my advice, be wary of any X5 cop cars in the highlands.......its only them that carry the sound equipment!!!

the dual carriage way is 70mph, there are no fixed cameras on those bits, there is a long stretch of dual carriage way ner dalwhinnie, sometime have a mobile unit there, but usually sit at the schlod summit (wont affect you tho its after avimore). the single carriage way is 60mph, there are a couple of sites with fixed cameras, but all nearer to perth, one southbound after dunkeld, one northbound after pitlochary, but they are all easy to spot, out in the open for a change!! watch for the bit at ballanuig, changes to a 50 zone for the junction, so going north dont accelerate too early and coming south, its at the end of a strstch of dual carriage way, so make sure you slow down when you see the signs!! there are others but cant quite remember the exact locations, sure other will know tho. not a bad road, unless it is busy, there are a few places to overtake if you have some power, but watch out for the junction at dunkeld, very common accident spot.
