I replaced my worn Brembos with another set of Brembos: http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=37_284&products_id=1426 Not the cheapest, but they do feel much better when new than when worn (if that's not stating the obvious!). They don't seem to fade much during fast road driving, but I do sometimes wish they had a little more bite...

Dunno if anyone's interested... Took the Scooby out this morn for its first proper run on the RE070s... lordy, lordy these are very good on bone-dry tarmac! Even down at 3dC outside temp they were holding the road beautifully. Seems that most of the form chat about these tyres is holding true i.e. not as good as an average summer tyre on greasy roads (certainly the case when the tyres themselves are cold), but fantastic on properly dry roads. Thanks again for all the suggestions, folks. Glad I went for these, more dry-oriented than the likes of the Eagle F1, but not as 'extreme' as the likes of the Toyo R888 which, for me, would probably be wasted on all but the warmest of summer's days. Plan now is to sort myself out with another set of wheels/tyres for winter. Got the wheels, few months to think about the tyres now!

I believe they can be, but the foam has to be scraped out – the tyre places don't like doing that so they try to flog you a new tyre.

A few options... Most cars with locking nuts also come with a locking nut key code that you can take along to a main dealer, who can sell you a new key. The drawback here is that it might take a while for the key to come through. Forceful removal method 1: Hammer a hex socket over the lock nut. Try not to damage the driving end of the socket in the process (you might use some wood between the hammer and the socket). Also you risk damaging your alloy with the socket if you're not careful. If you're lucky, the lock nut won't be too tight and you can free it with a breaker bar or wrench on the hammered-on socket. Forceful removal method 2: Find a welder, who can weld one end of a length of square tube to the locknut and then use a hex socket and wrench to turn the other end. I had to have this done once after losing my lock nut it worked perfectly and the lock nuts came out with absolutely no damage to the alloys. Good luck.

Aye, that's why I mentioned using up all the leftovers Och, when all said and done, I did some homework before buying my first 2.5L Scooby in 2008. The 2.5L WRX/STI engines had already been already for 2 years at that point, and then — as now — there seem to be very few first-hand accounts of popping engines/pistons/whatever else. On that basis, and especially on the basis of how smoothly/flatly it pulls, I'm very happy owning one. I don't like engines that are all about boost anyway. In fact if Subaru could've crammed a 3.0L in there that'd have suited me nicely And if you're happy with your 2.0L, then all the better too I guess I'm just not fond of all these (to me petty) debates that tend to rage on these forums... "classic vs newage", "newage vs hatch", "newage saloon vs hatch saloon", "2.0L vs 2.5L", "JDM vs STI"... baaaaaah – makes me comatose Did you get your 18" alloys yet Dave?

RE070s were fitted today... First impressions are good – wee bit slippy when I first left the garage, but fine once warmed up. Was rush-hour so didn't really get a chance to push them much – best scrub them in first anyway Handling-wise they feel very nice – more feedback through the wheel than before, very 'planted' and no tramlining whatsoever. Less squash when cornering too. Ride doesn't feel at all firmer than with the Avons, but new tyres tend to feel comfier anyway I find. Plan now is to source a second set of STI alloys before next winter (Dave? ) and fit them out with something a bit less slick for the colder months. Oh yeah, and the RE070s look rather spiffing fitted too
