Gleened this info from a motoring forum, the author claims to be a chemical engineer, what do you guys think ????? There is a small difference between supermarket & "branded" fuels. Basically, it all comes out of the same (huge) tank in the oil refinery. As it gets pumped into the road tanker it is dosed with an extremely small amount of proprietory ingredients including detergents, lubricants etc. The additive is in the parts per million range.There are a series of small tanks at the refinery each holding the "special" ingredients. At a refinery where I was working recently there were several tanks labelled "Conoco", "Shell" etc and one labelled "Tesco" (!!!!). All fuel meets stringent standards of performance even before it is dosed and modern fuel is nothing like the fuel in the 60s and early 70s. In olden times my dad (who was a mechanic) used to regularly do decokes on cars, stripping the head off and cleaning valves and piston tops. I can't remember doing this since I had a first had a car (1979), and the last one I can recall my dad doing was our Anglia in about 1970! Basically, there's not a lot of difference between Tesco's best and Shell - except about 3p per litre. You may, however notice a significant difference in performance with higher octane fuel (petrol, this does not apply to diesels) as this has better knock resistance and allows a more advanced ignition setting.
