mystery machine Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Car is a MY06 WRX. Main dealer have quoted £160-ish. Sounded a tad steep to me, but then it's been nigh-on four years since I bought brake pads (for a different car). Can anyone recommend a cheaper-but-just-as-good alternative to the main dealer? Normally I don't mind heading into a drive-in place for tyres, but I'm a little wary of letting some random pimply seventeen-year-old loose on my Vera Drakes... Cheers.

Firstly welcome to Scottish Scoobies I think a lot of folk are using Ferodo DS2500 on their newages but.... If you are Central Region I'd suggest speaking to Duncan or Alex @ Hypertech in Bonnybridge and they will keep you right with brands/prices and fitting. They can be contacted on (01324) 812212 Gus

arch Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Gus is right go with Ferrodo DS2500 the standard pads are rubbish. Give Alyn at AS Performance a ring http://www.asperformance.com/ He will sort you out a very competative rate and knows Subaru's inside out. I use the DS2500's on my road car and Sprint/hillclimb RA and they work very well If you give Alyn a ring tell him I suggested giving him a bell he would also offer advice on what is best for your specific needs Dont pay someone to fit them its a doddle and can be done yourself in about half an hour.
mystery machine Posted September 7, 2008 Author Posted September 7, 2008 Cheers for the info, Arch. Forgive my ignorance folks, but what's the downside to 'high performance' pads? Do they wear out more quickly than the stock items or are they harder on the discs? Thanks.

The perfromance pads generally need a bit more heat in them to get them working 100% but this is hardly noticeable. Yes, the Ferodo pads are harder on the disks than the standard pads, but unless you are going nuts with them, you'd hardly notice the difference. I have used the DS2500 on track and on road with standard 4-pots, with no issues. On my first track day in the wet when things are cooler, I heat damaged the standard pads, but the DS2500s lasted me for ages with several track days. I am currently using Performance Friction fronts in my Brembos, and again, no issues. I'd probably recommend performance pads if you were going to enjoy some spirited driving on occaision.

Worth speaking to AS Performance. Had a chat with them the other day, told them how the car is driven etc and settled on Ferodo DS2500 for the front (£130) and OEM+ for the rear (£45). I was told the Ferodo performance pads offer 25% more friction over standard while the OEM+ offer 10% more. As far as wear goes, they said that with the Ferodos I'd get about 90% of the mileage that I would get from standard pads.
