john_mchutchison Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 i have a 03wrx with 53000 miles on it, prob is it burns a lot of oil. i have to top it up about once per month. no visible oil leaks to be seen, engine bay is clean, surely this cant be normal? it has done this since i bought the car with 38000 on the clock, changed plugs, filters and oil. any ideas?
fai17 Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Most turbo charged car will go through oil.....it just depends how much and how hard you've been driving it... Do you see white smoke coming from the back when you are giving it beans?
john_mchutchison Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 have to say ive never noticed white smoke before, maybe someone saw it on 1 of the glasgow runs?
thewelsho Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 I think, if I'm not, mistaken, that burning oil is caused by oil getting into the chamber. This is caused by worn pistons or piston rings. Given that your car has only done 53k it might be a dodgy ring. If the oil was being lost any other way, you'd have surely noticed it on the ground or in the engine bay. But, as Peter says, the turbo does that more than NA cars. That's my tuppence worth. Now, will you fit my turbo timer! [:|][:$]
RS Grant Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 As far as I understand it: White Smoke = Water Blue/Grey Smoke = Oil Grey/Black Smoke = Fuel Do you get any smoke when you start/blip throttle from stone cold?? I would try and get someone to follow you on a clear and calm day on some dry roads. Give your car some yee ha and lift off and let the car run down the revs. The person following should be checking for smoke when you're accelerating and also, when you lift off there maybe some smoke on the over-run too. Cheers, Grant
RS Grant Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 ..........forgot to say, what oil is being used in the car?? If it is the incorrect grade then it could be passing itself through. Cheers, Grant
john_mchutchison Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 ill get someone to to sit behind me on the next strathy cruise, thx for help. cant remember exact spec of oil but i know it was the magnatex oil, think it was 15/85, could be wrong, have to say ive never noticed any smoke from car at all, maybe cant see it from the smile when i plant it[] my bro said this oil is shit for the scoobies, wot do u all recommend?
john_mchutchison Posted July 22, 2007 Author Posted July 22, 2007 just want to let u all know that i changed the oil and filter, got the motul oil as advised, and since then hasnt burned 1 drip of oil.[] doubt it must have been the oil i put in it the 1st change. i used castrol magnex so make of this wot u will.
fai17 Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Glad it's sorted m8...it goes to show that using the wrong oil it's not good for a scooby.
WUZ Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Any increase in the amount of oil in the TMIC, breather pipes, etc? Russell
