Implications ???

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine just picked up a very nice '05 WRX STI replica.

The previous owner said that he has swaped the standard ECU

with an STI ECU. To my mates kwowledge he hasn't had it mapped.

I don't know but does this sound right - just strapping another ECU to

the car and away you go (doesnae sound right to me) ???

Will depend on what STI Ecu that's been swapped in. The later STIs had variable valve timing on them, so if it was one of them then I'd be surprised if the car would even run!

Is he absolutely sure that's what's been done and it's not a PPP ecu that's been swapped in?

I would of thought the wrx would not run very well with a sti ecu .The engine ancillaries are different to the wrx like's of turbo, injectors, cam's maybe, fueling etc Just my idea might be wrong

Stephen,

Pretty sure mate, the figure that the ex owner spouted was 270 bhp-ish.

So it sounds like non-PPP to me ?? Don't know what year the STI ECU is,

but you rekon it can be done ? According to my mate the car car runs fine[8-)]

Dipsy,

That's what I thought, I know the ECU can learn but that much ???

270bhp sounds about right for a strong running WRX PPP... I'm pretty sure the book figures are 265bhp. I very much doubt the car would start/run with an STi ECU because of all the differences between the cars.

It isnt Blue with Gold 18's and SUBARU stickers on rear windows is it??

Cheers,

Grant

Cheers Grant, no mate it's black with 18" gold P/Drives.

And one of those wee scooby doo's on the parcel shelf[:S].

So you rekon the guy bought a PPP'd wrx ECU instead of an STI ??

My mate was given the 'standard' ECU with the sale ??

He better of lifting the carpet on passenger foot well .Then remove the four 10mm nuts holding metal plate to see what ecu he has ie get the number then go on to the ecutek website there is a list of ecu code numbers .Then you will see what ecu you have .If that any good

I'm not sure to be honest, I know that on the Classics you can tell a PPP'd ECU by looking at it... Pretty sure it had a Pink Sticker on it, might be the same with Newage, but probably worth checking before ripping up carpets and trim. [:D]

I think that its probably running a PPP'd ECU as I dont see how it could adjust and cope with all the extra stuff that an STi ECU would expect it to have and be trying to control.. I know a few people that arent totally clue'd up who think Prodrive and STi are the same thing, so its probably been something as simple as that.

If he's still not sure and he fancies a wee trip to Edinburgh, could be a good idea to book himself into see AndyF for a wee run with the Det Cans on to make sure that everything is a-ok and give him peace of mind... [:D]

Cheers,

Grant
