craig79 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 With all this great weather, was wanting to give the paint a bit of TLC. All I tend to use is a fairly bog standard car shampoo and then chamois. I've got the typical stone chipping on the front of the bonnet and was wanting to cover these up as best as (without a pricey respray). What products does everyone use to to get the best out of the thinest paint know to man[]. Think I read that someone used a blue T Cut to fill the stone chips then polished it off - could be wrong?? Cheers.
craig mac Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I would try Autoglym super resin, then autoglym extra gloss protection on top Try Turtle wax Extreme wash and wax its a pretty good product imho, Ideal if you are time limited
craig79 Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Cheers Craig, I've got a bottle of the 'red labelled' stuff. There's a black labelled bottle for 'deep shine', you ever had experience with that ? That turtle wax combo sounds about right[H] !!
RS Grant Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Turtle Wax Extreme is good stuff for a quick wash.. For a proper detail, you'll be talking a LOT of money to buy proper Swissol stuff, etc.. I just did our BMW at the weekend and used: Two-Bucket Method using Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo Chamois/Blade to dry car Meguiars 3-stage Detail which is - Paint Cleaner, Deep Gloss Polish and Carnauba (sp?) Wax It took around 4 hours, to do a Cabriolet, on the outside only.. Haha.. but the results are defo worth it. [H] Cheers, Grant
craig79 Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Cheers Grant (again lol) The car's always out 'n' about so for as much of a picky b.ugger I am about it, it would make me greet to see it dirty again after an hour. What I'm after is basically a good quality shampoo and reasonably priced polish that doesn't need 3 1/2 days buffing time[] But respect to the dedication buddy !!
RS Grant Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Haha, fair enough mate.. I'd go with the Turtle Wax Extreme Shampoo (Wash & Wax) then use Meguiars Gold Class Wax, pretty sure you can buy both from Autosave on the Clepi. [] Cheers, Grant
craig79 Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Sounds good to me !! Wonder if they sell those washing 'mits' that I've heard people talk about using. Have heard that sponges aren't really the best - what ever next eh[:^)]??
craig79 Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Forgot to mention, any trade tips for the stone chips ??
Richie Cross Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Halfords are doing 3 for 2 on all their car cleaning range and have some of the products mentioned.
oobster Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 You won't go wrong browsing http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk - lots of good guides with pictures and an online shop where you can buy some really good gear [Y]
the blue dragon Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Sounds good to me !! Wonder if they sell those washing 'mits' that I've heard people talk about using. Have heard that sponges aren't really the best - what ever next eh[:^)]?? Dont use a sponge mate, they hold onto grit etc and cant properly be cleaned. get yourself a lambswool mitt, and use the two bucket method. i would also suggest getting a couple of microfibre mitts to wash the lower panels, an keep the lambswool for the top half of the car. [Y]As for products, as oobster says, polished bliss is as good as any if not better for sourcing products, especially the blackfire range. hope this helps. cheers Iain
scoobyiain Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Forgot to mention, any trade tips for the stone chips ?? Have a look at this thread mate for stone chip repair. http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=20127
micra_wrc Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 daft question but what goes into the "two buckets"?
dougster Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 One is water mixed with concrete and sand, the other is gravel and mud.............
colzo Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 daft question but what goes into the "two buckets"? Shampoo in one, clean rinse water for your wash mit/100%cotton towel in the other. Helps keep the wash water clean and prevent the dirt/grit going back on to the car and causing swirls/scratches. []

To be honest mate if you can spend at least a good full day (8 hour shift) getting all the hard preparation done, you`ll be laughing for the rest of the year. I prefer Swissol which is costly but does a great job at protecting your car. AutoGlym and Meguiars are good products but I felt you have to use them more often to keep up the appearance/protection. At the end of the day its how much time/patience you`ve got. []
Boyakasha Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Swissol, now know as Swissvax is what you want. Alot of the cheaper products have heaps of chalk etc in them so you get white residue everywhere. They look good for a couple of days and that's it. If you want a lasting shinie and protection then you have to use a proper wax. Basically you should cleanse (polish) your paint work every 6 months i.e. after the winter months (April/May) and after the summer (September/October), then apply a coat of wax, then re-wax inbetween as many time as you can be bothered. I normally wax my car once a month. If you are serious about the finish then Swissvax or Zymol (Not the cheap £20 stuff from halfrauds either).
craig79 Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Thanks everyone, alot of good pointers there. Would have been replying but got to wait to get into work (laptop at home is dead !). Went and bought some of the turtlewax wash & wax stuff and meguairs (sp?) step 2 polish last night. Gave the car a wee clean with the shampoo last night. Seemed to come up quite good with minimal effort. Gonna do it properly at the w/end (with polish) - keep you all posted.
craig79 Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Talk about dragging something out[:$] But just to double check what are the basic tools i need for a good job, i've got the following : Micro fibre mit, chamois, one bucket (will get another), tutlewax shampoo/wax, meguairs step 2 polish. Still not sure what applicators / removers to use for the polish ? Sorry for being a dumpling folks[:$]
