vickyk Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Looking at starting the mods on my 2002 wrx but not sure what to go for and finding it all abit confusing [*-)] and not sure where to start!!!!!!!! I dont really want to take the car over 300bhp as heard a few bad things about clucthes and gearboxes going ! how true is this? So has anoyone got any recommendations?? I already have a 3" decat exhaust to go on with down pipe waiting to go on (when Paul can be bothered to fit it) heres a list of few things im looking at having done and would like people feedback and coments please. 1.Up pipe 2.OE Ported headers and manifold or stainless steel?? (this is where I start getting really confused [8-)] as im not really mechanically minded Please can someone advise the best and explain what they actually do?) 3.Samco Hose Kits 4.TMIC do I need to change this? If so is Ebay cheepies any good? 5. K&N panel filter 6.Uprated fuel pump - when will i need to change this? 7. Remap when mods on. (Recommendation and price?) Thinks thats about it for now as it will probably take me a year to pay for this lot! Thanks Vicky K
granby Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I'd say you pretty much got the mods sorted out 1. Up pipe - I'd definitely change this as it has a pre cat in it and I've heard that these can break up and if it does it's bye bye turbo 2. I'd go for OE ported headers, i had mine done by Harvey Smith harveysmith1@btopenworld.com but i believe API engines http://www.apiengines.com/index3.php do them as well but they are not on the website, they will improve the spool up of the turbo which basically means the turbo will start to boost earlier 3. Samco hoses, not really necessary apart from the turbo to intercooler pipe because the standard one will probably split when the boost is increased when remapped 4. TMIC, advisable to change it but don't go for one of the cheap ebays jobs, try and find a STi intercooler and as long as you get the pipework with it it's a straight swap 5. K & N panel filter, or green panel filter, don't really think there much difference in them but the green filter seems more popular 6. Uprated fuel pump, not 100% necessary but it's worth changing it anyway 7. Remap, there are many (Andy F - Zen Performance to name just 2) but i personally use Bob Rawle (if hes good enough for Roger Clark motorsport then hes good enough for me) but you could also try Jolly Green Monster who has remapped Dunks, Deani_age & Daniels cars, as to cost it can be anywhere from £400 to £600 depending on whether they use the EcuTek software or something similar but it's well worth the money Clutches & Gearbox's, I'm currently running 333bhp & 325ft lbs torque with the standard clutch & gearbox, the clutch is fine as long as i don't launch and even then it doesn't slip but it does smell a bit but i think i will be changing it soon just to be on the safe side, they say the gearbox is good for around 300bhp & torque so really mine should be playing up but as yet I've had no problems with it (that will be the kiss of death for it now) If you need anymore info please don't hesitate to ask [Y] Ian
baser999 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Perhaps an even more stupid question, but then you wouldn't expect anything less from me lol............is it possible for me to simply get my car remapped or are there other things that must be done as well? Might have some money available but need to know what else I'd need to budget for if I was to get the car remapped.
granby Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 What year is your car Barry You could have it mapped at anytime, but if you were thinking of doing some more mods then it would be better to get them done first then get it remapped
baser999 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Mines a 2000 - relatively standard still save for the d/v , cone filter and middle/back exhaust. I've got absolutely no idea how best to proceed on the modding front [:$] - at least Vickys got an idea of what she wants to do. Would welcome any idea on how best to proceed without spending 'mega' bucks. Sorry Vicky for railroading your thread but seems to be all about the same topic []
granby Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 2000 that's no problem as it can be remapped Well it all depends on how far you want to go Barry, do you want to fully decat it by getting rid of the downpipe cat (that would mean getting a cat section fitted everytime you went for a MOT) but you know that can be sorted or you could get a sports cat downpipe.
baser999 Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Reckon it might be easier to talk to you about this Ian - are you around in the evening this week ?
tony_cousins Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Well were does it all begin.......... To get some decent pwer and still remain safe I would go for Full decat Uprated fuel pump ( more for protection ) Panel filter Remap , Jolly green can do this for £300 on a new age !!! Thiswill see you around the 285bhp/280ftlb which is the limit for thestandard TD04 turbo and is what im running at the moment [H] If you want a little more then i would go for ... TD05 or VF34 turbo Sti pink injectors Cold air induction Kit Full decat Remap again by Jolly Green This will give you anything from 330-380 bhp and 350ftlb Asfor gearboxes, they are fine for 350 bhp/350ftlb but then can go popafter that !!!!!! You will need to uprate your clutch but i thinkthat is always best anyway[Y] But the standard one will goeventually anyway [] Dont forget that if youadd more power you will need to sort out the brakes and suspension accordingly [] Baser,if you remap a standard car you can get a further 30 bhp and similartorg because uk cars are mapped very safely for fuelling etc, jollygreen can do this for you [Y] Hope it helps Tony
vickyk Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 Cheers for the help guys this really helps alot as the information on other web site threads was way too confusing and contradicting. Baser no problem cos sounds like your in the same situation as me not really knowing where to start and not wanting to spend all the money all at once and if you dont ask then you will never know. []
granby Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Quote Reckon it might be easier to talk to you about this Ian - are you around in the evening this week ? Nope but i'm off the weekend
baser999 Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Will give you a call Ian over the weekend - may pop by if you're there and subject to if they get round to delivering that bloody furniture!!
vickyk Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 What is the diffence between the standard WRX intercooler and an STI one and what would i gain by fitting one? Vicky K
granby Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Quote What is the diffence between the standard WRX intercooler and an STI one and what would i gain by fitting one? Vicky K A STi intercooler is about 50% bigger than the WRX one, it will help to keep your inlet temps down (the cooler the air the better), think there are a couple for sale on Scoobynet at the moment It's also advisable to get a STi bonnet scoop as well so more air is getting to the intercooler [Y]
vickyk Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 Thanks Ian Will have to check my piggy bank to see if i can get one [] Already got an STI replica scoop, should be painted and ready to fit in the next few week
granby Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Well if you've already got the scoop then the intercooler is a must []
vickyk Posted June 24, 2007 Author Posted June 24, 2007 Hi all Thought i'd post a little update on how our Mods project is coming along, Im really pleased at how quickly we have ticked off the list and were almost done now, and we have really enjoyed working on the car and learning more about it as neither of us knew a great deal about mechanics or modifying. Must say a big thanks to Granby for all the orgonal guidance on our choices. The next big thing for us will be the remap. The project was to get the car up to 300bhp and heres the origonal list and what we have done so far. 1.The exhaust backbox and centre section decat ...Fitted at last [] 2.Up pipe.. got but wating to fit when headers done. 3..OE Ported headers ..Unable to get hold of Harvey[] so we been doing a little research and going to have a go at doing this ourselves[] 4.Samco Hose Kits.. we went for just the Turbo set for now on Ian's recommendation [Y] 5.TMIC got a nice STI one ready to fit when hoses turn up [] 6. K&N panel filter ????? 7.Uprated fuel pump - Just ordered [Y] If anyone thinking of buying an uprated fuel pump they are on very good offer from Indigo GT at the moment 65quid [] 8. Remap when mods on. (hopefully remap with BOB Rawle in near future) Not sure what to do about the Air intake, any recommendations or comments appreciated as we have put the filter on our list but juggling a few other ideas at the moment. 1. Leave standard filter 2. Performance panel filter i.e STI or K&N 3. Zero Sports Intake pipe with Standard or performance filter 4. Silicone Intake pipe with standard or performance filter. 5.Induction kit (Didnt really like the write ups about this choice) 6. Modified air intake with either option 3 or 4 ( have contacted a company that were featered in Japanese performance magazine) but no reply yet [] Also were looking at the intercooler splitter/diffusers as seen the aluminium zero sports type, or the cheper ones on ebay any recommendation on these do they make a difference? And finally for future shows does anyone know where I can source some Bonnet Dampers for a good price as cant really justify a 90quid spend on these??????? Vicky K
HOL Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 [q]3..OE Ported headers ..Unable to get hold of Harvey so we been doing a little research and going to have a go at doing this ourselves [/q] Ive got a die grinder diamond cutter tool that I did mine with on the TypeR. If you want to borrow it. I just hired a die grinder from that tool place near Rochester Station. You only need half a day, if you have rthe headers off already.
granby Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 First i believe Harvey is abroad at the moment and previously he was in hospital but he is hard to get hold of anyway As for the ported headers i've recently found out the this company has them in stock www.mocomracing,com and they are a lot nearer if you don't want to do them yourselves as Hol suggested Lastly i don't think you will get 300bhp out of the standard TD04 turbo, they seem to get to a max of 280-290bhp so please don't be disappointed if you don't get 300bhp but with the mods you have you should be able to get to 300ft lbs torque which is really what you want for drivability []
