baser999 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Motor seems a bit sluggish starting......is this likely to be the battery or a potential starter motor problem? If its the battery do I need to go to a main dealer for one ? Hoping to get to Notcutts tomorrow night if anyones going that can offer advice or can perhaps test the battery/starter Thank you
Guest leebo77 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Was it sluggish turning over on the key? First thought would be the battery. Replacements shouldn't be that expensive and IMO you don't need to go to a dealer for a new one, most motor accessory shops stock them. Got my last one from Halfrauds and it's fine (so far [:S]) If you get stuck, I've got some jump leads and am not too far from you []
baser999 Posted January 18, 2007 Author Posted January 18, 2007 Seems sluggish on the key which makes me think it may be the battery - anyone got a means of testing it ? This will no doubt appear a stupid question but if I bung a new battery on is there going to be anything that needs resetting - will it affect alarm, tracker etc etc [:$]
ROAR Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 if you can get to lesness motor spares in lesness road they should be able to do a battery check for you they are very reasonable for batteries as well
wedmonds1 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 I changed mine cos tracker kept making it flat and did not need to reset anything other than presets on radio. I assume its ok
Dalthegooner Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 You can get a free battery check at any Kwik Fit Barry and you don't need to go to a main dealer for a new one. Any decent car accessory place will do them. Make sure, when they give you the battery, that the terminals are the rtight way around. Have you checked the cells to make sure they are all full? Top them up with some distilled water. Try charging the battery up and see if its any better as soon as you take it off of the charger. If it is but the next day its sluggish again then its a good bet the battery is knackered.
HOL Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 My TypeR started doing this about 6months before the battery gave up for good. I tried charging it and it worked, but then quickly relapsed. It will last a little longer, but ultimately, it will give up.
baser999 Posted January 20, 2007 Author Posted January 20, 2007 It's died - went ok yesterday, but not a light today []. Dash lights come on but fade when key is turned which is presumeably the battery telling me it's had enough. Awaiting Subaru Assistance to give it a once over - if they can at least start it I'll get chance to get somewhere to buy a battery
Dalthegooner Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I'd say its definitley the battery. If they start it and you go to get a new battery then make sure you take the tools you'll need to change it at the shop otherwise you'll be stuck there []
baser999 Posted January 20, 2007 Author Posted January 20, 2007 Subaru Assistance turned up within eta , checked things over, started the car and said it was definetely the battery - alternator, starter etc all ok. In the absence of any tools to hand went to Halfords as "we'll fit it" - bollox.....muttered something about not being happy to d/w it because of immobiliser ? and any way they were going to charge £87 [N] for the battery - I only want ONE matey. Ended up getting battery comparable to their HCB005 from my mate Jim Chalmers shop on Harmer St in Gravesend (outrageous bit of advertising ! ), borrowed his tools and paid him the princely sum of £39.99 [] [Y] and he's got more idea than the kid in Halfords
j-k Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Chalmers in gravesend is a top place...Always got what you need in an emergency, and good prices too... jon
Nudge Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Must be an eppidemic, my battery's gone the same over the last week, Blame it on the weather....
