TheCrow Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 As Subject. Classic 98 wagon with std alloys, needing new rubber. What is the widest i can go? 205 is whats on just now, which seems far too thin for me. Can u get 225 on them?
euan_r Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 with the onset of winter and more wet days im actually looking to reduce width. wide tyres are crap in the rain and snow. bring on the snow []
TheCrow Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 true, though i dont really drive hard over the winter (apart from in snowy carparks ) so really just looking for sum rubber to get me through the winter, then i can have fun on them in the summer
euan_r Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 well width is a direct parameter rather than side wall which is a percentage if in correct. and 215 is what most classics run. so you wont rub. are you going lower profile? if not 215 will be about the max as bigger wheels are just upstepping by lowering side wall.have you got the car lowered as well? i dont have a lot of knowledge about tyres but this is my understanding
TheCrow Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 na car isnt lowered. I was thinking about goin for a lower profile, but 16" lowprofile on std suspention just wont start to fill those arches. so is it 215/55/r16 that most are running? mind u just had a look online and at an extra £20 per corner i think i may just stick to 205. (thats for the f1's) Edit again: found the Toyo t1-r 225/40/r16 for a good price, would since the 225 is a % of the 40 mean that it would be the same width as the 215/55? i.e wouldnt rub? Thanks
euan_r Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 no 215/40/17 or 215/45/17 so need to downstep and see what the equivelent is to keep speedo semi-accurate. though 16s are subaru specified so am sure theres the correct ratio some where on the web.
ally-b Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 All you wanted to know about tyres here , including a conversion calculator near the bottom of the page [] http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html HTH, Al.
harvey_smith Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 The Classic tyre size on 16" rims is 205 50 16. As I wanted to raise top speed by 3 or 4 mph, I cannot remember now, when I had a 7K rev limit, I went to 205 55 16. You may experience the tyre rubbing the rear inner wing under heavy cornering if you go to 215 55 16. Exercise great care and check it out carefully before you purchase. I fitted 225 section to try out (Pirelli) I did a test run to a total of less than four miles and one of the rear tyres, which I thought was "just" rubbing was destroyed. Worn through to the sidewall cord on a sharp bit in the inner wing arch. I had to buy the tyre which with VAT was nearly £130 from memory. BTW my 205 55 16 are Vredestein Ultrac. Excellent in inclement weather.
