sandyRS16i Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Was looking for some advice as i am not 100% sure on parts between BDM and JDM cars.I have an MY99 STI V5 Type RA which has destroyed a rear wheel bearing and looks like it needs a new rear outer CV joint as well. So i contacted my local Subaru main dealer (Halleys of Milngavie) , explained the problem and what work is needed (deffinately a bearing and maybe the CV joint will need looking at) and they said that they would do the work and repair it for me. However they have now stripped the back corner of my car and told me that the bearing was knackered and it looks like the CV joint needs replaced too, but it only comes as part of the rear drive shaft Anyway i told them to get the parts and sort it as i want my car back asap, now here is the technical bit. They have told me they will only fit specifc Jap spec parts (bearing and shaft) which they may have to order for Japan and could take up to 6 wks . I told they just to use the same parts they would put on a P1, but was told they cannot garuntee they are the same so refuse to fit them, or do any more work until these 'jap parts' are obtained. So i am now quite pi$$ed off as they have stripped my car and wont put it back together again......so if anyone can tell me that the uk parts for a P1 or other UK model are the same as the parts for my Import STI, then i can go in an kick off until they fit the parts i tell them to........not having my car with them for 6wks as nobody ever told me that they couldnt do the job, was promised my car would have only been in for a morning.......However when i complained and said i wanted a curtosy car i was told that i should have expected this, afterall i took a JDM car to a UK dealer........ Overall their attitude towards me has been awful, and the level of service a disgrace, they never phone when they say, i have to continually chase them for info all the time. I phoned last monday and booked the car in on the Wed, told them the car was import and what was needed work wise, nobody mentioned any problems to me. When i dropped the car off i was told i could expect it back by the end of the day, yet when i called to check if it was ready i was told 'we only have enough time booked to have a look at the car and remove the bearing not to do any other work on it' so i was not best pleased. Then i was told it was my fault for it maybe needing the CV replaced ( this they were told about tho). So now the car is there and they refuse to do any work or fit non Jap parts, wont provide a curtosy car and tell me there will be problems getting parts, none of which i was told when i booked it in last week. The only reason i went to a main dealer is as its a Subaru i thought that i would have better service and parts would be easily available and the work would be a high standard. Looks like i was worng on all counts......so my advice is avoid using Halleys. So if anyone knows about the parts comapability between BDM and JDM for the rear wheel bearings and CV joints can you let me know asap.
st3ph3n Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I always thought the P1 was a V5 for the UK, so don't see why not. I'm sure someone with more of an idea will be along shortly with the info you require.
sandyRS16i Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 thats exactly what i thought, but when i asked at HAlleys they didnt seem to have a clue TBH and told me they refuse to fit UK parts, so hoping someone will know and give me a definitive answer so i can then go and get this sorted as i'm not waiting weeks for parts to be shipped from Japan when they will be the same as the stuff thats available now..........and most likely be charged a premium for this
RS Grant Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 What about sourcing the parts yourself from a specialist supplier and get them to fit it all back up for you?? Cheers, Grant
fai17 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 You are not far away from Greersport 01505683388 and if you are not completely happy with the said Dealer then why don't you pay them for what they've done and get the car lifted to another garage. Greersport do JDM cars all the time so they know their stuff on classic scooby.
fai17 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 What about sourcing the parts yourself from a specialist supplier and get them to fit it all back up for you??Cheers, Grant That's a good idea too. When my car broke the front drive shaft it got rebuilt by a wee work shop (that Greersport use) in Paisley.I think he can help you out too but i don't know his phone number but it's in Canal St and next to the vets. Oh he fixed my drive in a few hours.
sandyRS16i Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Problem is that i would take the car elsewhere now, but they have dismantled the rear end and refuse to reassemble it with any parts other than these Japanese ones, they also will not fit any parts unless they source them. The parts they have removed cannot be refitted either so unless i can find out if the uk parts are the same and then kick off to get them fitted, my car is in their possession with only 3 corners fitted to it.
fai17 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I understand and i feel for you m8. I've been in those situation before and it's not nice. Best bet for you is to phone Greersport and ask for Bill or Colin to get their advice and learn from them. They are only a phone call away. And if you prefer me to call them just let me know. But it's maybe better for you to call them as you'll know all the problems. sorry i can't be of anymore help
RS Grant Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I'm not so sure that the parts used have to come through the Dealer Network?? Can they not phone Greers/another supplier and buy from them then!? When I was having my first Scoob rebuilt at Town&County, I got told that I could get an uprated clutch for them to fit, but that the warranty wouldnt cover my gearbox after that due to the non-standard clutch kit... I would phone your Dealer and ask for the phone number of Subaru UK... If they ask why, then explain that you were never told: there was no courtesy car, that they would use parts sourced by them only, those parts had to be Jap, etc... For what its worth, I think col666 found out that the rear hubs/wheel bearing on his V5 Type-R was different to a P1... Possibly due to the DCCD?? Cheers, Grant
colin_ross Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I think Grant may be right, type r's have two pot brakes at the rear due to not having abs and as P1's have abs I thing they use one pots at the back, hence a different hub. Anyone with a P1 care to check?
maxpower Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Try Eurojap in Coatbridge they are a breakers year (not sure of number), I got a new driveshaft from them same day a while back, subaru said it would take 2 weeks to get a new one through dealer network. Worth a shot I guess....
