problem with a GT turbo is that there are so many..

you need to speak to a tuner that HAS experience in selecting turbos for a cetain engine/application and take it from there.

I Have a GT30 with a 44lb compressor wheel[*-)] i think the wheel size is right............

And it was less than half the price of an Owen Developments one, Because i picked it up second hand and it also has a full years warranty[:o]

And i am more than happy with it 1 bar @ 3100 and Approx 1.7 @ 3500 so i like it, not laggy in my mind

If you want to guarantee 400+ then I'd say the Garrett hybrid but be carefull which one you get, the 20G has made more than 400 but not on all applications.

Andy

Regarding 20G....400bhp only come with over mods and addictives?

Seems very strange that you now come out with that response now andy, since you were aware of problems both times and even removed the first map.... at first map u told me the air was flowing "too well" for the turbo, so car goes back with new turbo, headers, FMIC, injectors, etc etc and still no further progression, hence the change to gems, car is on rolling road whilst still with ecutek on day of change to gems only for me to be told my car has been left running "dangeously lean mid-range"...

also, i find it strange you think my exhaust headers were melted, in the fact that they have just come of the car and been sold on and are having no troubles and were in good condition, secondly, i might ask, what engine problems??car is in for upgrades now and none due to anything braking....

as i said in an earlier post, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and i was only stating mine, i know you have mapped a lot of newage cars since then and people have been happy with them, but i felt both times that we tried it that theecutek map did not work for my car, have had other people look at it who agreed,so it was changed to gems, which i am finding suits the car a lot better.

Sma01,

I just wanted to let you know that your not alone mate. I also feel that this forum is so biased to whom they recommend and appears as soon as a member defects from the legion of andy f they get shot down. I am not saying that Andy F doesn’t know what he is doing by any means but there are others that are totally capable of tuning a car and in my case it was proven like yours. I hear in the tuning world that Steve Simpson is defiantly capable of tuning a Scooby and knows what he is doing (Does a lot of actual rally cars). Infact Steve Simpson like my tuner goes around the world tuning so cant be that bad. It is a shame the forums have evolved in this manner as I would have expected forum members to share info in an unbiased manner instead of feeling intimidated by certain members as soon as they have defected from the norm. Forums should be for the members and only for the members it is a place to share info and experiences and to help each other out instead of just promoting one or two people, new and fresh ideas are always a good thing why is this forum so set in old ways lets face it there are many people far superior to the "Gods" currently dictating this forum. So just my two pence here but just wanted you to know your not the only one. Can I ask if your car was mapped on the road or on a dyno. Does Steve Simpson have his own dyno or use a particular brand of dyno. It would be interesting to see what Steve’s comments would be if he was to hear Andy F’s comments. Good luck and hope to cross paths one day.

Would it not be abit hard to promote other people as the majority of owners on here have their cars "breathed" on by the one or two people always talked about.

Pete (fai17) has his car mapped by someone else other than Andyf as he is running Gems and he has publicly applauded the fact that a good job was done.

Am sure if more people were willing to get Motec, Gems etc and have it mapped by the specialists in those systems then there would be more "promoting" of other corners.

So come on guys, dig deep, get the systems and tell us how you get on.

I had GEMS mapped by Sally Sampson on my old car and it was a bag of poo, was a tad better after the Dentist mapped it but in general i did not like the GEMS as a usable road ECU.  I later had a PowerFC mapped by Andy and the car was a different car all together and an absoloute pleasure to live with day to day

Had nearly all the mainstream ECU types in my last 3 cars and the best performing in all situations is the PowerFC mapped by Andy.  At least it starts and runs when hot and indeed cold, not one or the other like the GEMS seemed to operate

There are a dozen or so top end Subaru mappers in the UK, Bob Rawle, Pat Herbourn, Jolly Green Monster, Paul Blamire, Steve Simpson, Phil Marks, Sam Ellesar to name but a few but how many of these fine people reside in Scotland, developed thier own record breaking Impreza here in Scotland, done countless hours of testing/datalogging of various turbo/ecu/injector/induction/manifold combinations that the Impreza engine is capable of throwing up in order to give the best advise for any possible given situation and have ginger hair?

I rest my case your honour

Herbie

As you are aware, I originally sent to you an Apexi ECU which you purchased as a 'supply and map' package. At no extra cost, this was supplied complete with a map I compiled and loaded to suit your set up for running in purposes. The aim here being to save you a double trip down to see me and basically save you some money.

I realise however that you are still smarting from me not offering you a refund on the final mapping session you had already paid for as part of this package....... but then failed to turn up for.... twice !

I personally think it was a bit of a cheek to ask for a part refund after completely wasting 2 separate half days of my time by not turning up for a pre booked mapping, even if you did have the best excuse yet......... that you were in Jail !!!

The final mapping was subsequently completed here as per your original request, even if you had taken it to your mate previously and had him do a 'part' job on it. You seemed more than pleased at the time, especially when I explained in detail how I was giving you a much safer set up than you arrived with.

I'd like to think I don't intimidate anyone here nor do I think I "dictate this forum" whatever you may mean by that ?? Please feel free to post up on here anyone that has felt that way.

You may want your "far superior person" to finish off answering my technical challenge to him on the other forum regards the tuning of your car on a rolling road. I think he wanted to put the topic to bed but if you really want to dig it up again..........

cheers

Andy

Avoid the APS. You may be disappointed.

For over 400 bhp I would NOT recommend the TD05-06 20G although I did get 420.7 bhp on my 95 WRX Wagon, with STi heads, Sigma ECU and Optimax plus 2mls/litre. Various other of my own mods, headers etc. There is more to come as we stopped a little over 6k due to a plug issue and it will be on V- Power next time. This result is the exception for a 2 litre not the rule.

Consider a GT30 with the 44lbs wheel. Choosing the right turbo is not easy because you often do not know what will happen until you try it unless you are lucky enough to try a car with VERY similar spec and the turbo you want.

I put the Ion Turbo off the STi 6 Wagon that had done 585 bhp with race fuel onto the WRX Wagon when it had WRX heads. What a disaster. Would not get 1 bar in 4th until over 4,000RPM and max power was improved over the 05-06 but nothing extraordinary. On the STi 6 Wagon it was achieving 1 bar at 3,200 and 1.85 bar around 3,600.

For Gems mapping, contact Steve Simpson. He is prepared to travel and was in Scotland mapping Tuesday and Wednesday as far as I know.
