ScottyDog Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 How smooth is the delivery of power on a classic? Just got my first Scooby at the weekend, a MY00 classic wagon. Now I might be paranoid, but I don't think the power delivery is how it should be. The guy I got it off stated he would just put in normal unleaded as it is a UK car, however bringing the car up from down south I have put BP superunleaded (first fill up) and then Esso superunleaded (just what ever service station I ended up at). Everything seems ok on the motorway crusing at 80-85mph however once getting nearer home, off the motorway and starting to use the gearbox it felt like the power was coming in waves, bit of power then dips, bit of power then dips, etc until grabbing another gear. Is this just the ecu re-setting for the higher grade of fuel? If so how long before it re-sets? If not then anyone know what it could be? All the mods are a Magnex back box and a BMC panel filter, however it has never been on a rolling road to set these up, although I beleive this is not always necessary as it is not the full system removing the cats. Also I am only planning on using Shell V-Power from now on as there is a garage two minutes from my house. Any comments greatly appreciated, being a newbie you might start to see more questions being put to you over the next couple of months. Regards Scott
thefastone Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Hmmmm my car is a uk spec car, and even that tells you to only use super unleaded... []
ormiboy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 hi mate, i would stick it on a rolling road sometime soon, that way you can get a bit info on what might be going on if anything. It would be nice to see a nice afr plot just to keep the mind at rest bearing in mind that its flowing more thro the aftermarket exhaust. Only cost you about £40 too Hope all is well willie.
ScottyDog Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 As I understood a UK car can run on normal unleaded, but most people choose to use super unleaded. What would you of used before Optimax and the like came out?
stripe Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 The sticker in the inside of the fuel cap in UK spec cars states use only super unleaded, however this sticker goes in the fuel caps of other countries stating this aswell, and it states the octane rating of 95 (which is the RON of UK fuel) the sticker is more for countries with a lower RON of standard fuel, and is letting people know to use the higher RON fuel. My car has never been run on anything other than Optimax and now V-Power, it is far better for the engine, and MPG is much higher too
wrxmania Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Use Super/V Power, and then take it to Andy Forrest Performance in Port Seton for a check over - will cost less than a R.R. session and give you a more realistic impression of how it is running too [] Brian []
darryl_martin Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Main dealer told me to put SUL in my MY00. Then I asked him if it was REALLY necessary. Compromised on a mix of the two, 1 tank SUL, a couple of tanks of UL....etc However having driven the car on optimax, it's optimax all the way. Certainly wouldn't describe the power delivery as smooth, turbo comes in with quite a hit, or mine did anyway, then pulled all the way up to about 6300-6500 rpm. Never went far past that tbh, didn't have to. As said above, give it a go on a rolling road/AF and try a few tanks of the Vpower. I was convinced my MY03 wrx wasn't right when I first got it, missed the "kick" from the classic, wrx felt slower (smoother). Still made 269bhp/269lbft which is about what it sholuld be making, so nothing wrong, just different. Good luck
