z1000 Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Not my car as i've gotten past the need for a dustbin size exhaust but stopped a little p***k in an unfathomably loud MR2 who keeps driving past my house tonight for a friendly little "chat" and he swears it's legal and i did see him stopped by the plods a week or so ago but how can this be ? as when i took my bike for it's mot i was warned my cans were a bit loud but it's like listening to an electric car compared to this bloody thing. How do they get away with it ? I'm not exaggerating either as i was sitting outside yesterday and could clearly hear him a couple of miles away.
stripe Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Pretty grey area im afraid, but it is illegal to alter the silencer of an exhaust to make it louder, also illegal to remove the silencer completely.
wrxmania Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Also there is a nice slightly louder sound and there is a really harsh, brittle noise you get from many N/A cars.
rabskyline Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 bikes cans have to have akite mark on them but not sure about these crap cherry bomb things that hurt yer ears !
z1000 Posted August 6, 2006 Author Posted August 6, 2006 He has a RAGE back box straight through centre and no cat BUT its a J plate so probably doesn't need one. Our old scooby was loud but always tried to keep it quiet passed houses, people etc he on the other hand canes it everywhere. Should of heard the missus lay into him about her pussy ( furry with 4 legs and a tail before you start) who likes to play in the field across the road. Rab bikes don't need stamped anymore according to mot guy it's up to them to decide wether it's significantley louder than standard whoch all sounds a bit half arsed to me.
bigdavie Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 theres a guy drives round here in a 106 that has an exhaust that actually hurts my ears when im indoors wi the windows shut !! i know where it sits feel like putting a note under his wiper saying ive got a can of expanding foam and im not afraid to use it !!
z1000 Posted August 7, 2006 Author Posted August 7, 2006 I'd just go straight for the foam with no note LOL. We've all been there and done it but twats like them make joe public think that any one with a non standard exhaust (most scooby owners) are the devil himself and i for one don't want to be seen in them same light as the nobber doing a burnout in his mums fiesta in the F&M thread.
rabskyline Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 well return the favour and sit outside his mothers door and rev the shiit out your bike/car and then chap her door and shout ! HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES !!

scooby doom Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Pretty grey area im afraid, but it is illegal to alter the silencer of an exhaust to make it louder, also illegal to remove the silencer completely. Unfortunately, like a lot of traffic law it's very black and white - the grey area comes misinterpretation and from inconsistant enforcement or Police discretion. As Stripe pointed out it is not legal to make any exhaust louder but if its reasonable and the cars driven sensibly - who cares? It's when you've Barry ShumaCorsaMacher driving in his lead boots or your MR2 T**T that they get noticed and pulled. However, even then some cops may warn and some may just slap ya with an on the spot fine. There is of course the other option of the 21 day ticket to have the offending part 'sorted' at an MOT centre. Obviously, this would imply that all exhausts that exceed the standard noise levels are illegal and that would be true but common sense means it's impractical to go after them all so you're back to discretion again. It's just a shame that there are donkeys out there spoiling it for the rest. Phew...! off the soap box now.
