Stoooopid question time. Engage bigdavie mode. I'm joking mate, learning is what makes life fun [;)]

So why would you want to wrap a turbo?

Now I understand why you wrap headers and exhuast componentary - keep the heat in as hot gas flows more freely. Now I also understand that better gasflow in the turbo would be good. BUT, if you wrapped a whole turbo then surely you'd also be heating up the intake side more than normal too? And as we know upping the intake temps is about as useful as replacing the pistons with ice lollies.

So what have I missed?

You only wrap the hot side of the turbo. You can buy turbo blankets, but its cheaper to wrap it with exhaust lagging, even to to make a layer of zig zaged exhaust wrap over the turbo because you cannot be ersed taking it off and wrapping it is good.

A hot side is wrapped because the hotter the exhaust side of a turbo runs, the more efficient it will be. What you dont want is the cold side getting hotter than it has to, as the cooler the induction, the better the burn.

I know what you're saying Davie, but i can stick my head under there after a thrash and no' singe my eyebrows though, so must be doing some good. [;)]

Heatwrap is a good thing, but it doesn't get rid of all the heat. You'll still have heatsoak if the engines running for a few minutes when stationary. Touch the inlet manifold after a few minutes idling, bet you can't keep your hand there for long! Once up and moving, the temperature comes down *fairly* quickly though..
