Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 I dont really understand the whole wheel size thing.... what's the widest I would be able to get to fit? I really want fatter ones on the back than the front.... help me please []
craig mac Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I really want fatter ones on the back than the front.... Is it not the other way round fanar fanar PMSL [] Craig
st3ph3n Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Fee, I stand to be corrected, but people seem to stick with the same size all round on the Impreza. Cars with bigger rear wheels are rear drivers that need the extra girth to get the power down. If you install different wheels front and back then surely with the profile differences you'll end up with different radius tyres. Would that not put undue strain on the diffs on a car with symetrical AWD? Personally I think your car would look fantastic with the 17" Buddy Clubs in Anthracite on this page - http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk/catalog/produ...products_id=481 18"s on a classic is surely just too big?
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 I dont know! Are 18s far too big? Anyone with a photo of a classic with 18s that they'd care to share? I really have my heart set on a set of BBS LMs.....just want to price them up just now (and then have a heart attack!! hehe)
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 found this http://www.rtecalloywheels.co.uk/fitment_guide.htm
scientific steve Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 i have some but at the moment am unable to get into my photobucket account as i am a spoon and forgot my password [] i have dougsters old 18' alloys on my type r and i think they are the dogs [] have sent a request for me password and stuff so will try and get them piccies up soon
st3ph3n Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I do like the BBS rims. They have some new hollow ones that are very light. If the only thing you're thinking about when upgrading the wheels is the looks then 18"s are fine, but you don't want to wreck a good car by fitting a size of wheel that just doesn't work. If it was me then I'd want to fit lighter wheels first and foremost to reduce the rolling mass. For every 1kg you take off the weight of your wheels it's actually like taking 10kg off the car when they're moving, apparently. Obviously moving up to 18"s could increase the weight if you don't get some nice light ones. You're also reducing the sidewalls and as such you could end up with a firmer ride which will be at best a bit of an annoyance or at worst a complete nightmare and the car becomes too harsh and handles badly. That's just my opinion though. No point having a fast car that's wearing lead boots.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Don't talk daft!! 18's are not too big for a classic, i had some on mine when i had it. IIRC i had about a 3-5mm spacer on the front so the calipers would not foul the inside of the rim, whether you need that depends on the rim of course. If the supplier is any good then they should advise you on your needs. []
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 I understand what you're saying..... I'm not def going for 18"s....that's just what was suggested. In any event....the BBS LMs (if I ever got them) would be for day to day use... I'd keep my existing 17"s and I have a set of 16"s for track use etc
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 if you are happy and used to 17's then stick with the BBS in that size. what you will find with 18's is that it tramlines more and the ride firms up. Also depending on profile of tyre you need to keep a constant eye out for potholes as i found out to my annoyance when i shattered one doing 50mph.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Kartman has 19's on his P1. Another well presented good point []
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 I have to do that anyway! Edinburgh is bloody full of potholes.... have to say though that I have noticed a difference since changing my tyres....think I went from 40s to 45s and it has made it so much better
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 what about thickness? I've got a feeling that 8.5 is actually too thick...am I right?
wrxmania Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Kartman has 19's on his P1. Another well presented good point [] []
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I have to do that anyway! Edinburgh is bloody full of potholes.... have to say though that I have noticed a difference since changing my tyres....think I went from 40s to 45s and it has made it so much better wish i had done that but being a dumba$$ then i went for 35's
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 what about thickness? I've got a feeling that 8.5 is actually too thick...am I right? unsure about the size in inches but my STI had 225's, WRX's are on 215 IIRC, unsure about the classics, could be the same. with the new wheels i have got i am looking at now going up to around 245's. To be honest i think you should stick with the standard thickness or are you somehow having trouble keeping traction []
drb5 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Kartman had my old TSW Pace in 19's...immaculate they were and well worth the cash he paid me for them! [] Fee, it ain't about the wheel size when you get to 18's or 19's, but the tyre size. I know people who have SOMEHOW got away with 18's and 225/35's, but many more people can get scrubbage on the rear's with 215/35's as i am getting just now. With the 19's on me old RB5, i had to roll the rear arches(went a bit far n crcked the paint...doh []) and it was lowered on H&R springs. Scoty eventually had Leda coilovers IIRC dropped till the car was scraping along the floor, inner arches were rubbed away to feck and had 19" OZ Supperleggras with 215/35's on them. Nowt wrong with the handling of the car, except if you were hard round the corners, the wheel could very well get in contact with the asphalt. If you want looks, go for 18's with 215/35's and if it's sheer driver enjoyment, 17's with 215/45's. 45's are easier and cheaper to get a hold of. You can't run different sized wheels/tyres from front to back, otherwise it'll handle like a boat, as it's 4wd...keep that to front or rear wheel driven cars. [] Any more questions, just ask. [H]
drb5 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Exceptionally good deal... http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk/catalog/produ...products_id=481 And details on the offset's are here... http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm#4.2
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 Aw....but I really want big fat rear ones for when I get my 22b []
scientific steve Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 not the best one i have but it gives you the idea
drb5 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 [] I'm sure someone will be able to help you out with that ok, when the time comes. [][] With the 22B, you CAN run wider tyres/wheels, but unfort they have wider arches, which you ain't got. []
drb5 Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 not the best one i have but it gives you the idea Dougsters old wheels m8? Ah, them were the days....
Fee Posted July 25, 2006 Author Posted July 25, 2006 I think the 18"s look good...thanks for the pics Wheels sizes and tyre sizes just confuse me!
