STi_Bandit Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 After getting the car back from its 30k service a wallet lighten, they said i would need new front pads and discs soon, i was looking at getting the EBC redstuff pads and EBC Discs. Anyone got these what are your opions Martin
johnnyr6 Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Dunno about the discs, i've heard they warp easy but you hear that about most disc makes (except ap). As for the pads i used red stuff on my classic with 2 pots and 1 track session nearly killed em off. I rekon 4 pots would easily see them wasted in no time. I tried the track based yellow stuff and they are miles better and only a few quid extra. Another good pad is ferrodo ds2500 but they're more money.
STi_Bandit Posted July 10, 2006 Author Posted July 10, 2006 Ive heard the red stuff warp disc but would it do that with there own make discs. Also looked at black diamond discs n pads
st3ph3n Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I got 12K out of a set of Red Stuff pads, that included 2 trackdays. On standard discs though. I liked them so much I went for them again a few months back and not had a problem. Not used the discs, but I believe Gumball destroyed a set on a trackday and they were brand new.
euan_r Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 fitted red stuff pads on my two pots a couple of months ago. only use car on sats almost nearly down to wear indicators already. less dust though. also handy if some muppet has run off with anti-squeel shims
johnnyr6 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 12k out of redstuff[] with four pots??? I'm lucky if i got 2k with my 2 pots. You'll need to stop using tyre walls as brakes stephen... lol If you liked the redstuff try the yellow, much better.
st3ph3n Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Standard 4 pots on an 05 WRX. So they're stopping a heaver beast than 4 pots on a classic too. You lot want to try going round corners like men, and not scrubbing off all the speed. And I never hit that wall. I just got VERY VERY VERY close to it.
fai17 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I've still got my red stuff pads on with the standard discs and they have performed superbly.I've been on Knockers twice and Crail three times and there is still about 1/2 to 1/3 left on them.I've got EBC disc and Mintex pads to go next and i would recommend EBC anytime but please bed them in slowly.........
scoobaroo Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Had the red stuff pads installed about a month back on my V7 STI, get the thumbs up from me, night and day compared to standard pads. Big Stephens spot on, lay off the middle pedal [], its for slowing down [] ( You dont wana be doin that [sn])
johnnyr6 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Oh... so that is the way men take duffus then?? In that case i'll stick to driving down it in a controlled fashion (sort of). Although admittedly, i still have a lot to learn about driving on track.. []
st3ph3n Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Going by my trip I also have a lot to learn. It was my fault though, not the brakes. I was writing cheques my body couldn't cash.
euan_r Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 not use the middle pedal. aye right. you lot might do this on track but try driving at speed on public roads. I do go round corners quickly but then u find slower drivers, tractors and diggers. wind your necks in lads. oh aye and numpties on the wrong side of road because theyve pushed too much in their sh!tty people carriers. still state red stuff doesnt last more than a few K.
andrew_lally Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 never used ebc redstuff but my mate did in his cossie!! he set them on fire the same day i cracked a brand new set of black diamond discs at knockhill!!! so i personally wouldnt recomend either!!! standard discs and a set of mintex 1155's......or forodo racing pads but a drilled and grooved disc would definately help with heat dissipation!!! regards andy
st3ph3n Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I've been known to enjoy a bit of speed on the highway, and track use is much more harsh on the pads anyway. If you're doing them in after a few K of only road use then you're either driving like a total maniac, or you're not bedding them in properly. You've got to get a good few miles on them with gentle pressure. Like I said, 12K including a half day and a full day trackday (with the afore mentioned spin) plus plenty of enjoyable spirited runs, including being in the lead group on the November run and following The Squirrel.
STi_Bandit Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 How long is a good time to break the discs n pads in? of light pressure. Martin
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I had the EBC turbo groove discs with red stuff pads on my classic afew years back, discs were sh1t as they warped but the pads were not too bad....................personally would not use them again though!!! Would also steer clear of drilled discs on a scooby as i have heard a fair few times that they are prone to cracking, if anything grooved discs are the best choice. []
Guest AlanK Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I have the same set up on the classic I just bought The brake is a bit dud-dud-dud-dud... not really bad but not a smooth braking - does this mean something is warped? I thought it may be normal for a those type of discs but begining to doubt it now - they were only fitted in November but I only got tha car a month ago so who know whats happened since then. If they are warped any easy way to tell which disc it is? Whats a good non warping replacement? Cheers
andrew_lally Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 they most likely cracked alan....you will be able to see the crack if you have a good look..... warping is caused by excess heat so i believe..as for a non warping replacement...how fats your wallet???? performance kits have an alloy bell that holds the disc...and the tranfer of heat is much lower seemingly!!! but a good grooved disc and some mintex or forodo racing pads is what i would recommend!! i use AP 6's and i have to say they are mind blowing!!! had them on for a year now and they just never let you down.....never fade!!!...the level of stoppong power is just superb!!! expensive but will definately give you the balls to outbrake faster machinary!!! and thats a damn good feeling lol regards andy
andrew_lally Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 they say 200 miles light use should bed them in fine!!!
STi_Bandit Posted July 13, 2006 Author Posted July 13, 2006 What about the Group N Discs from TSL, with say the Ferodo DS2500. oh and goodridge hoses how would that be as a set-up Martin
irish al Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Quote Ive heard the red stuff warp disc but would it do that with there own make discs. Also looked at black diamond discs n pads Step away from the black diamond discs, they are crap. My standard discs were better. Mintex 1155 pads will be good/
SEEVERS Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Martin,i've got DBA 4000 discs with Mintex 1155 pads on a MY01 Bugeye (Gumball had the same set up on his STi a while back)i find this a great combination for the newage cars....also when i renewed them i got a good deal from Dunc at Hypertech in Bonnybridge..... Del.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 DBA's are good, had them on my UK300 afew years back. Along with some good pads and braided hoses you can't go wrong.
STi_Bandit Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 When on the SIDC stand at the jim clark, guy came up from Performance Friction Brakes, they seemed like a good brakes. Really looking for something bit cheaper though. Martin
SEEVERS Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 After all this time owning a Scoob Martin and ye still don't get it.......... "the words cheap and Subaru do not belong in the same sentence"....lol. Del.
