Heat shield advice

Recommended Posts

The heat sheild for my headers has started to rattle again, ive had this before and just bent it a little to cure it.

This time tho it wont go away. After reading the latest jap performance, the project phoenix was doing the same thing so they just removed it!

So is it alright to just remove it entirely?

I don't have any on my car but I have wrapped the headers to keep the heat down under the bonnet.

Just out of interest, what year of car do you have? I still have all of the old heat shields off of mine and you can have them if that helps. Not sure what compatablilty of different models would be like but mines off a classic.

Thanks mate. im running a my jdm 95. The only worry i had abouttaking them off is i can imagine the nice hot headers getting quenched if i hit a puddle and that cant be good for the headers.

ill have another go at the bending option but if that fails i might just pm you to maybe get your spare one off you.

thanks again.

i wish mine were wrapped !

Budget for around £50 to buy the wrap and the ties.  You could do them in situ but you reeeeeeeeeeeeealy wouldn't want to. They stuff is very itchy to work with and doing it just above your head in a crampt and confined space would be an absolute nightmare.

If you split them from the up-pipe there's only 6 bolts that hold them on so it's a no brainer really.

Wrapped my first set of headers with dry wrap and it was very itchy

with all the fibres.

For the second set I dunked my heat wrap in a bucket of water. Made

them far easier to wrap with no annoying fibres. Also allowed me to get a

tighter wrap and it will probably of shrunk a little when it dried out making

it tighter again.

hose clips are a good option for rattling header heat sheilds...either cut a couple of slots and thread through as to catch one half of sheild and pipe...or wrap right round sheild and clamp as tight as poss...
