G.Mac Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Got a bit of a shock when I phoned Phill Evans down at Subaru Technical saying that they could not cure the knock that I have been complaining about since the 11th July last year. They came up with an idea of an uprated spring to put into the rack but this has made no difference to my car along with the new top half to the steering column that they also fitted. They say its becaust the STi9 onwards has a solid Unaversal Joint where older moddles have got a rubber damper in the column. The car did not knock when I test drove it when it had 260 miles on the clock, it only started at between 400 and 500 miles, Phill sayed that this was the normal setteling in period for the car. After being confronted by this news I contacted the dealer that I baught the car from to say that I wanted to hand the car back (bearing in mind I complained about the Knock 4 days after I took delivery of the vehicle) where he told me in no uncertain terms that he WILL NOT take the car back! It now turns out that they are going to replace the whole rack in a hope that this reduces the noise, but if that does not work im shafted. If the car displayed this knocking nois I would NEVER HAVE BAUGHT THE CAR!!!!! Oh yea Phill at Subaru says this happens to all new STi's due to the new unaversal joint setup!!!!! anyway heres a wee vid of me going round a roundabout and getting the knock http://media.putfile.com/STi-9-Steering-knock Graeme
dipsy Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I don't have this problem with Jdm sti .Can't you send an email to subaru Japan complain there a problem with uk/euro sterring column knock and see what they say
wrxmania Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I take it its' that annoying clicking noise at the end of the clip - Billyboy has had the same issues, as must everyone else! Annoying. Brian []
ANDYJDMSTI Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 I don't have it!!! Should have bought a fecking jap one [][] hope you get it sorted
G.Mac Posted May 4, 2006 Author Posted May 4, 2006 Yes Brian, thats it sounds alot louder in car. Subaru UK and Japan have been in contact with each other and came up with the uprated spring (which does not work on Billy's or my car) I am just about to go phone Peter Kinnaird, the MD of Subaru UK (who just happened not to be in the office yesterday[^o)]) to talk to him about taking our cars back if the new rack does not fix. Both Billy and I complained about the knock within 3-4 days of ownership (well inside the 30 day cooling off period) and were assured that the noise would be fixed!!!! Anyway we will see what happens Graeme
imprezapete Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Make them aware you will be taking this information to the national press on how all impreza cars of that year onwards do this after they have sold the car and told you that you cant get your money back. That will put the wind up them, there must be a lot pissed of drivers out there.
jobg Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Hi, I have noticed a 'steering knock' on quite a few, when the steering gets loaded up during cornering. We replace the steering rack bushings with the Whiteline steering rack bushes. This seems to cure that problem. Cheers Job
G.Mac Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 Tried to phone Peter Kinnaird at 10 this morning, was told he was in meeting till 12, ok I said, I shall phone back at 1300. I phone back at 1300 to be told he is on lunch till 1330. I phone back at 1340 to be put on hold for a while and then told that he is in a meeting for the rest of the day!!!, girl says I will get him to call you back, I say thats what you told me yesterday!!!! Turns out he is going to an auction tomorrow so cant talk to me then either, but should be able to talk on MondaY SUBARU UK / INTERNATIONAL MOTORS SUCK!!!!!! Shall keep that in mind about the Whiteline gear, but think it shall be like getting blood from a stone trying to get them to pay for it We shall see what happens when I get my new rack in 3 weeks time (ps I did say to Peter Kinnaird's secetary that I was thinking about taking legal action and contacting the motoring press if the problem is not sorted out soon) lets hope that she passes this onto Mr Kinnaird Graeme
