frank c Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Can fit my new front speakers to my Classic. (Infinity 6510) Bought a Subaru fitting kit from Halfords but it's the wrong size (130mm) and the speakers are 165mm I'm not confident enough to make up spacers myself and don't want to bodge the job. Any advice more than welcome Frank.
dougster Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Is there not a ring inside the Infinity box? I had 605s (iirc) and they fitted straight from the box
frank c Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 No rings inside the box Dougster....[] I bought a "new" Subaru fitting kit from Halfords but it's not up to the job.I asked the guy if it was a universal kit but i got the usual Halfords blank look as he said " I'm not sure m8 ..we've had this problem before..[:^)]
irish al Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Halfrauds must of had so many returns on that fitting kit you would think they would of changed it by now. I bought one last year with the same problem. The tube behind the counter didnt believe me until he tried to put a 165mm speaker inside it. It must be right he said if its in the catalogue. Spacers are easy to make from MDF using you old speaker and new speaker grill as templates for the holes. 12mm MDF should be fine. Sometimes you can remove the mesh from the new grills, flip the plastic bit over and fit it between the speaker and the door. Have done this once but I had to remove the protruding plastic bits the screws went through. This isnt the best option as the plastic may split, and is definately not as good as the MDF. Halfrauds isnt all bad as they sell screws with the exact same thread as the ones holding on the original speakers, except they are longer to accomodate the MDF spacers.
frank c Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 Thanks Al, Would prefer someone to fit them for me though..Any ideas????? Frank.
irish al Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Cant recommend any shops who sell the spacers as I couldnt find any either and ended up making my own. You could always pay a car audio shop to make some spacers up and fit them for you. I would do it for much cheapness but I am moving house and my tools etc are packed up.
Edinburgh-Chris Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 I can have a look for you mate, i can get spacers made up pretty quickly but i would need a look before hand! If you want to meet up then just ask, i have done a couple of custom fits for inpreza front and my car also has Infinity speakers in the front. Cheers, Chris
dieselpower Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 I'll be fitting a set of components to the lass's Classic in a week or two, I'll let you know how I get on with it. Shouldn't be a problem to knock up an extra set of spacers []
Edinburgh-Chris Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 no worries mate, i an have a look anytime! As fas as i know, it should not be a hard task. Chris
frank c Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 Cheers Chris, What part of town are you at??
Edinburgh-Chris Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Hi mate, i am out at Straiton. Just along the by-pass. Cheers, Chris
frank c Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 If i can't get it sorted myself i'll be sure to give you a shout Cheers Frank
dave_morgan Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I made up a set of spacers for my 165 Focals a while ago, and it wasn't too tricky. As long as you have a jigsaw or something similar to cut the round holes in the MDF, you're laughing. I'll have a dig in the garage tonight and see if I can find the spacers, as I probably have them lying around somewhere (I took the speakers out my last car and haven't fitted them to mynew ones yet). I'll take some pics so you at least have an idea how I did it. Dave
dave_morgan Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 p.s. I'm sure Ray Smith Audio could also do it (down near Meadowbank/Abbeyhill), but it's not likely to be the cheapest option!!!!
frank c Posted March 6, 2006 Author Posted March 6, 2006 Thanks Dave, Appreciate the help m8.....DIY is not my strongest point..[:$] Thought about Ray smith as i used to work next door, but your right..they are expensive.. Let me know how you get on. ps; where about are you....not sure if i've seen you around. Frank.
dave_morgan Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Did you work for Lucas? (or whatever they're called now!?!)
frank c Posted March 6, 2006 Author Posted March 6, 2006 Aye Dave......Now it's called LSUK..I used to work beside Lindsays mum Frank.
dave_morgan Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Aha, that was going to me my next question! Beat me to it ! []
