mikeyjm26 Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Hi everyone, have a tricky one for you. I have recently changed the water pipe from the thermostat housing to the oil filter and I am haviing problems. After loosing some antifreeze I temporarily filled up with water which should be fine. But what is happening now is that the car is starting to overheat and the heater is only blowing out cold air. But, and there has to be a but, when driving the temperature drops and stays at a normal level and hot air comes out but when stationary the car starts to overheat nearly to the top. Any advice as per usual would be greatly appreciated. Best regards Mikey
wrxmania Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Airlock? Try running the car with the radiator cap off, revving up every so often and let it expel the air? Brian []
wrxmania Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Fans not working on the radiator or the thermostat not working properly to switch them on?
Highlander68000 Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 You need to get more water in there and remove all airlocks! I have successfully used the following method: Remove radiator >>> header tank small return pipe. (connects to top of radiator and I remove whatever is the easiest end.) 1) Top up water as much as possible. 2) Squeeze and hold top large radiator hose. 3) Put finger over end of hole at the radatior end and let go of top hose 4) Repeat 2 and 3, topping up header tank as necessary. 4a) When the system is full, water should pop out of the hole/pipe at the top of the radiator when you squeeze the hose. 5) Run the car for a couple of minutes - with heater on full. 6) Stop and repeat topping-up procedure if necessary. This is slow, but what it essentially does is sucks the water from the header tank around the engine. If you don't cover the hole, you just suck air when you let go of the top hose. I hope this makes sense. --- Jon
Highlander68000 Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 The highlghted pipe is the one I'm talking about to remove one end of.
andrew_lally Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 radiater fans i would say too!!!....think they on a seperate fuse

Best regards Mikey Another classic example of me mis-reading the post [:$] Sorry If the fans do come on, I would definitely say there is a lack of water in the system. The effect you describe is exactly the same as sometimes happens when water is low. I think it is just under 7 litres to fill up the water system from completely empty - I can't remember off the top of my head. How much did you have to put in?
the squiggle Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Also When filling the system put the heaters to the hot position and blast the fan onto full power. As the car starts to get some heat into it keep pumping the bottom raditor hose until the thermostat opens and the hose becomes very warm to the touch. Now switch of the engine Once the expansion tank wont take any more fluid, on with the cap and take her a short drive and then let her cool down to ambient temp, then top up with the engine running, again pumping the bottom radiator hose Grant
mikeyjm26 Posted March 5, 2006 Author Posted March 5, 2006 Thanks everyone for help and suggestions. I will try this and see if works. Thanks Mikey
mikeyjm26 Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 Ok everyone, managed to get problem sorted. Added 2 litres of antifreeze, let the car run with the cap off for a while so as to get the air bubbles to come to the top, held the pedal down to 2k revs for a couple of mins, topped up again and again and problem sorted. Running sweet as a nut now Thanks for all the help. Mikey
