how reliable are the engines and what mileage would you expect before major work.

Looked at a 94 with 110K miles, everything seemed ok until after the test drive and noticed/smelt burnt oil from left hand side on engine, guy said that it was the rocker cover gasket-he said the other side had been done but not the left due to the hassle.bullshit or not?

is there a upper limit to mileage-I realise alot will be down to how it has been looked after but should I steer clear of ALL 100k plus engines that have not had some form of rebuild??

Oh and welcome to the forums too [;)]

Oily and smokey - not good, and if they "could not be bothered" doing something, then I personally "would not be bothered" to buy it.  There are LOADS of good examples out - keep looking and buy a good one.

High Mileage should not be a problem, as long as you pay less for it, and it has been meticulously well looked after.  All cars can have problems but Impreza's seem to be as reliable as any Japanese car.

Drivers side rocker cover is a bummer to do as its tight me and WRC No 1 done it together he was at the bottom and i could just fit my skinny hand in to get the bolts out!!! High mileage engines dont cause trouble at all our wagon is well over 130,000 and still going very strong indeed with no major hassles.

My engine had 43K when I got it. It now has 138K. I have no intention of replacing the car it in the forseable future.

So what does it tell you if a car has a high mileage?

Reliability that's what. Less time in the workshop and more time on the

road.

Hypothetical situation; Two identical 5 year old cars for sale. One car

has less than 1000 miles on the clock, the other has 40,000 miles which one

would you go for?

Would it be the car that's only been used occasionally for

a run down to the shops, without ever warming the engine up properly,

and with all the corresponding wear and tear. Or would it be the car

that's been used properly. I know which one I'd go for.
