Ladies and Genteman this is a call from help. My first 3 days of joy with my new purchase have ended in pain..

I now have a lovely knocking sound from the front of the engine ! (42k with a full history is rubbing salt into the sore bits face-icon-small-shocked.gif )

Initial diagnosis, Cracked piston, big ends?!?! The 64,000 pound question is yet to be answered..

I'm looking for help with costings of short engines, engines available for sale? Just any help or direction.

it depends on where you are mate but Steve Whtison through here in Edinburgh has great knowledge with regards to engine rebuilds and would be happy to assist. He just finished some work on my car and the workmanship was spot on. I recon there are other people on here who would happily recomend him for work like this!

Good luck mate,

Chris

Hi Baz,

I found myself in the same position as you after one day of STI ownership....so I know how you must be feeling. I researched all possible avenues - but decided that the best option for me was to get my existing block rebuilt. I had originally decided to go for a 2nd hand engine as these are generally a bit cheaper than a rebuild, however most had done around 30,000 miles, and what with my bottom end having broken at 41,000 miles, I couldn't see this being a sensible option in the long term. For a few hundred more my engine is now being rebuilt with new crank, bearings etc and will have the modified oil pump fitted to prevent that potentially causing engine failure in the future. I also get a full 12 month warranty, which as I will be using the car for work is a big peace of mind thing to me.

PM 22B-Andy from here as that's who is doing my rebuild.

Hope you get it sorted soon - you'll wince every time you walk past it until you do!

Cheers,

Brian

Cheers for the responses guy's.. Scott (sma01) is making a few lines of enquires for me but there's been talk of a 3k bill in the air for a rebuild.. face-icon-small-sad.gif

Just for more info.

Its a 99 classic UK Turbo.. (So Guttted!!)

Is the oil pump the problem?? whats Subarus take on that??

£3k sounds a bit rich, it needn't cost that. www.importcarparts.co.uk are offering rebuilt engines with new crank, pistons, rods etc on an exchange basis for £900 plus VAT, based on an impreza turbo such as the one you have. I would have a look at that as a possible option, the guy there is quite friendly and will go through various options with you. He also usually has a stock of second hand engines and short motors also.

There have been stories of the pistons in the oil pumps sticking due to a potential design fault, if they do fail they could cause bearings to run dry which would lead to a broken bottom end. Rebuild time is a good opportunity to fit one and for the amount they cost would be a worthwhile mod for peace of mind if nothing else.

I agree with Gumball..... Would defo be asking the person you bought it off for money back, or to foot the bill of a rebuild. If they say they will rebuild it, then send the fecker to a Subaru Dealer and nothing else.. Make 'em pay!! face-icon-small-happy.gif

Baz, like I said earlier on mate, give Dunc a phone(01324 812212) and he will sort you out....I was going on a guess of around £35, as was getting quoted prices of just over that for a new 2.5 engine from Teg Sportface-icon-small-wink.gif not enough power to be had for me thoface-icon-small-tongue.gif

I'm in the trade and got the car from my place of employement and was thinking I had a engine rebuild on a car I just got pushed up my ar*e...  I can't give to much detail but the sun was shinning on me and we have a deal sorted but means the fun is capped for a month and i have a 106 smoker to get me from A to B in the mean time.

But this post is in my mind incase Mr Pete Tong visits !!!

Thanks again.. It feels like a family in here..
