Gumball Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 This afternoon, i met up with a friend of mine and we got our gear together to go for a leisurely mountain bike excursion over in the hills of Old Kilpatrick (OK Hills). Bearing in mind, a life of working in an office, smoking, ,internet, alcohol and TV and sitting on my rear driving is the norm and cycling up somewhere called "8astard Hill" isnt really an everyday occurance for me these days. The old platoon sergeant shat started happening where our target was just over the ridge and wasnt really that far after all he kept saying Honestly, having not really done much for the last couple of years i was absolutaly pegging it !!! i could hear my smokey lungs wheezing, my heart pounding, a horrid stitch in my side and all the time shouting at myself to "get a move on you pathetic wretch"........as i negotiated 8astard hill. Well, my new year resolution to try and claw back some level of fitness is harder to do than expected but i'll keep going. if i dont fall asleep tonight and keep going for 100 years. SOME OF THESE- A COUPLE OF THESE ONE OF THESE UP THESE MAKE THE BROKEN MAN !!! THEN THE OLD "21 days on the rigs,20 Mile forced march, overtime...." WASNT AS BAD AFTERALL SYNDROME
Bing Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Nice gear Chris, nice scenery, sounds like a braw day Catch you on the spinning machines at Greens! Recognize this little hill from my last jaunt oot?(its a famous one!) clicky
G.T. Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 pmsl did tell you those were big hills and that you would be blowin out your hoop just wait till tomorrow when the aches set in hee hee
ANDYJDMSTI Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Get yourself on the Fan Dance then you will know what pain is you either have it or you don't.................back to the pies then buddy????
Gumball Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Steve, Its Fort William? they have cable car things there which would suit me much better tbh Peebles next. apparently thats a harder climb. stroll on rambo......i'll see you at the bottom
Gumball Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 its all relative matey. the hills of brecon and the likes are fine when your fit. trying to get fit after no PT for a couple of years is hardcore. feck the pies !!!!!! NO CHANCE

Gumball Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 LOL In a high pitched voice "Do you like me geordie jeee-ans"
peter_reid Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Brave man going uphill on that bike. You must be mental! Take it up the gondola at Fort Bill for the best 5 min 25sec ride ever. Pete
Gumball Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 the gondola sounds like the best way. even going up hills without the bike would suit be better. there were times when i wanted to throw the facking thing over the edge !!! hill walking may be for me
peter_reid Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I once made the mistake of going on a cross country run on my downhill rig with the deeside thistle. 10 miles breathing out of my ass. One poor sucker offered me his camel back and I drained it with one suck LOL! Left them for dead on the downhill though! Mans Sport! No lycra allowed!
RA Dunk Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 << hill walking may be for me >> ever heard of the west highland way from milgavnie to fortwilliam?? i attempted it before but had to give it up due to multiple blisters , thats a really nice walk (bit long though) if ya fancied a bit of hillwalking i would recommend it
chris_c201 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I would deffo recommend the west highland way as well, done Milngavie to Tyndrum (60 miles) in three days then we gave up as the zip in our tent burst and i woke up covered from head to toe in midgie bites!! Apart from the midgies it is superb, great scenery, good exercise and a good laugh if you go wi the right people! Just beware of hitting Conic hill not long before Balmaha which was the end of our first day, nearly killed me!
RA Dunk Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 ROFL tyndrum was the same place i gave it up as well got to the point i couldent walk (my own fault for being rigged oot half arse lol) ...i know wot ya mean aboot cronic hill i was almost dead before i got to the top of that f3cker!! excellent scenery along loch lomond the trossachs etc
chris_c201 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Yeh, i was wearing trainers as well, ended up wi a few blisters although it wasn't too bad, would deffo wear proper broken in walking boots if i was doing it again though!
Gumball Posted January 6, 2006 Author Posted January 6, 2006 always fancied doing it. i might get myself to the standard required this year then do it next year. sounds v healthy
chris_c201 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 20 miles a day is a realistic target, i was about 19 at the time, reasonable fitness, carrying the pack was a bit of a killer on my shoulders at first but being an ex army man you should know a lot more than me about that!! If i was doing it now i would be aiming for 3 days but thats jus cos i'm becoming obsessed wi diet, fitness and the gym jus now....
UK300_Impreza Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I ride Dunkeld, Fort William, Perth, and Innerleithn. THe toll this race season two blown shocks, one new rim after fort william destoryed it on my race run GUTTED was on for a good time and a new back end see below for pics

If so what group? How steep is Dunkeld????? Fort bill can be a bike muncher for the Sketchy,s. I ride tubeless but use "Stans no tubes." Works fine. Team mate of mine had 4 puntctures at Billy and i persudade him to use Stans in his tubeless. Ended up with Scottish champ medal. Pete
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I too did that run four squillion times in onde day and was shot to sh1t after it !! Note the fact that i was on a hardtail and impressed two of the Team Animal riders who could not believe that i wasn't on a full susser...... I'll be back one day !! Cheers Cal
Gumball Posted January 6, 2006 Author Posted January 6, 2006 yeah the gondola up then mental pace down sounds like real fun, your nuts Cal going over on that thing
UK300_Impreza Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I race SDA and some of the NPS last year i race senior wish it could be master lol. The top section of dunkeld is rocky and steep and technical till the half way mark where it flattens out for rock garden and single track
peter_reid Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I think I recognise that M1. Is it Ally Mclennans old bike? Pete
