AVCR Boost Controller

Alrighty Folks,

Contemplating picking one of these up in the new year, couple of questions for anyone running one..

Will i be able to install it myself and if so what about the settings, would i need a rr session to get it set up??

Lastly, going on the price is it worthwhile on an otherwise fairly standard car, would i be as well spending £50 on a boost guage and manual boost controller?

Cheers

Chris.

A good bit of kit if fitted properly, yes.

But if fitted poorly it will cause problems and £££

You wont be able to lift the boost much or at all though I wouldnt think.

If your car is standard it will cut if you raise the boost past a certain point (different for JDM and Uk cars and also model)

You will only be able to play about with the duty cycle to be honest.

To lift the boost higher you would need to address the boost cut and then I wouldnt even think about raising boost without a knock reading and a Air/fuel reading as you run the chance of being lean (under fuled) which is the result you dont wantface-icon-small-sad.gif

It can be set up without a R/R session, no problem but if your not confident doing it yourself and dont understand it fully....then dont do it!!

Look at what your wanting to gain from your car. Is it just a small lift in power your looking for or is it an extra 50bhp??

To be honest you wont get either without doing work else where on the car.

The short answer is, yes you can fit it yourself..so long as you can read an ECU pin out diagram and work a soldering iron.

It can be set on the open road.

You could buy a boost gauge and a manual controller but its not capable of controlling duty cycle or gear spicific settings.

The AVCR is better by a mile when fitted

Hope that was a help. (clear as mud I thinkface-icon-small-blush.gif )

Okey Doke... think i got that, lol

I was under the impression there were a few folk running about 1.1 bar on a pretty much standard set-up... Only mod so far is a panel filter.

Early next year i will have approx £300 to spend on the car and i'm looking for the best bang for my buck so to speak... not too sure about exhaust, may de-cat with something subtle like an STi backbox as i don't want much noise.

Cheers for the info

For the money your looking to spend I would fit the downpipe (ebay for £100)

Like you said, an STI back box would be better, (ebay£50)

After you have done that I think you will be happier with the car.

You will still have approx £15 left and I would invest it in a Knocklink so you ca keep an eye out for any det problems.

Just an idea though mind face-icon-small-wink.gifface-icon-small-happy.gif

Dont tan the cars hide after installation of the AVCR and get free membership of the 2.5bar club like the

Squirrel did! (Chuckle) Thats the default setting out the box, and the handsome chap from Gallowhill

didnt realise this as as he toed the hole off his car thinking, "This is going like a feckin steam train!!" he

looked at his boost guage and the eyes popped out the sockets as he saw 2.5 bar. Mind you it lived to

fight another day!!

Sounds like a plan...........

Would it be about £100 for the part and £100 to get it fitted? This would leave the centre an up-pipe cat, these enough for an MOT??

Going from fully stock exhaust to de-cat up-pipe and STI back box would i notice much of a diff in noise / performance....

Cheers for the suggestions, if anyone else has any other plans for about £300 give me a shout..

Wilky... if i go down the route of the AVCR i'll try and stay away from 2.5 bar lol, no wonder it felt like a train.......

I actually just bought one of these at the weekend and i am installing it on Saturday with a few very knowledgable guys!!

The point i am trying to reach with my car is where my car is sensably siting at a safe boost level without any knock from my sensor or over boosting from the ECU.

Since i have had my car i have had a really good exhaust including headers, flexi uppipe and 3" downpipe from the turbo to the back box and i always get fuel cut when really hammering the car.

I am not expecting night and day but i am led to believe they are actually a decent piece of kit once learned and trusted. Although i also bought a boost gauge this week just to cover my ass!

All the best mate, i will post up my response on the unit over the course of next week.

For your £300 i would spend it on a second hand decat downpipe exhaust system m8.

and you will notice a big difference in perfomance and noise.

and if you want it quiet you will need to get a custom one like mines from Meercat in Kilburnie.

just my personal opinion m8face-icon-small-wink.gif

Anyone running a standard STi backbox with a decat down-pipe??

Curious as to how loud it is, i guess it wouldn't be too bad as the STi box is fairly subtle?

I'm now swaying towards de-cat downpipe, STi backbox, boost guage and maybe a knocklink...

Got a mate thats a mechanic so i should be able to save a bit on the fitting of the downpipe to cover the boost guage.....

Chris

I have same car as yours and ran an STI bb, decat downpipe, decat centre and unresonated centre section, hence leaving the up pipe cat in and it was super quiet at all revs

I now have Prodrive BB and decat up pipe and it is still 'relatively' quiet. It is certainly quiet enought to avoid unwanted attention!

May even have a STI bb lying aroundface-icon-small-wink.gif

Perfect, slightly more burble than the stock system though??

Giz a shout if your selling the BB, not planning on fitting it jus now but if its at a decent price i may be tempted to store it face-icon-small-wink.gif

When you de-catted the downpipe did you feel a noticeable difference?

Yeh, more burble than stock system but defo not too loud!

I had de-catted the centre section before doing the down pipe but there was a significant difference - the car gains circa 20-25lbs torque and you will be able to hear the turbo spooling up.face-icon-small-happy.gif

Ill have a rake for the bb and will pm you
