Very stupid question, but i need my car remapping to accomadate a few mod's i've done. Have been advised it's the next tuning step for the car. So my question is, is there anyone on the island that can remap ecu's ? to save me having to go to leicester

after ringing no fewer than 3 tuners across, i am now confused as hell ! each suggests a different method of further mods and some say put a de cat downpipe on now it will help and others say as soon as i get it on and blast it, the boost limit will come in and go nuts. I don't know what to do now. Plus there mentioning the dreaded "engine check" light being on all the time when i get the de-cat put on. Think i may have to meet with Dave of here as his car is closest to mine and his still seems to be running with mods.

DaveK - help ! need advice

my mobiles 498753 if you can spare the time for a quick chat on these bloody type R's !!

Is it a Type R V5 that you have? If so, from my experience definitely get remapped for 97RON otherwise you are sitting on a time bomb if not using octane booster. Depending on how far you plan to mod, you might consider a mappable ECU - I run a Link on mine which was relatively cheap compared to the likes of Motec and GEMS and is doing a fine job of running 420bhp with 2.33 litres on 97RON so it will give you plently of scope. All my work was carried out in the south of England area - so I can help you out with contacts if you are prepared to travel.

Kind regards

Octane booster thing goes for any import really that hasn't been remapped for UK fuel otherwise you'll likely be getting det eating away at the pistons!

Favourite mapper of choice in the UK seems to be Andy Forrest (look for Andy Forrest performance in google for his site) who does the Apexi Power FC Ecus like mine. He supplies & maps them for about £700-750 which isn't bad considering they are direct plug & play and are about £450+ to buy on their own.

His 210+mph impreza uses one and people never shutup about how good he is on Scoobynet so he knows his stuff.

Just ring them rather than emailing as I've tried emailing twice about mapping mine and had no reply from over a month ago. face-icon-small-sad.gif

Michael, sorry on slow response just seen this post, not been on for a while.

As said before no, no one on island for mapping.

You have about the biggest choice with a V5 for mapping/ecu, as Jim and Andrew said Link, Apexi, Gems, Pectel, Motec, Hydra........ or ECUtek the original ecu.

All depends on what you are looking to do mod wise, if its just exhaust and filter then I would say ecutek it.

Original ecu has more research and development time than aftermarket ecu's have, thus dependant on mapper, helps eliminate some of the problems associated with aftermarket ecu's ie cold/hot start etc.

But aftermarket ecu's can also have extra options that out way the use of the OEM unit.

Anyway back to the original question, you can fit exhaust and decat without any problems but also as you have been told it could go bang, no 2 cars are the same.

I got away with some of my mods for a while as I added various gauges to monitor what was going on and also didn't rag the car as much, which I must admit has spoilt driving the car thinking it could go pop at any time.

But the gems went in as I got a good deal and I was also limit to what my car can have done to it as it can?t be ecutek'd.

Ultimately it's a gamble, going by the route I took I would say get it mapped from the outset so you can drive the car and not have to worry about possible issues.

ROFLMAO. Dave is also known as "Dave the Gauge" face-icon-small-wink.gif If you get a chance take a look inside his motor, he has more gauges than the space shuttle face-icon-small-wink.gif
