the squiggle Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Looking for feedback regarding suitable areas that can be used for our next Jaunt in the country Also how many would be acceptable in a year? Early March, Late May and End of August for example There has been 5 runs in total Areas visited have been......Cairngorms area twice..........Run down to Newton Stewart........Loch Lomand and north to Inverary...................Down to Moffat and up the Devils Beeftub. All have them so far have involved some cracking roads but i am looking for some suggestions for me to recce. Grant
andy Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 The Cabrach at the weekend was cracking. It's a road I drive regularly. The Cairn O' Mount aka Banchory to Fettercairn is a must. Cracking road. Your ears pop driving up it and there's a great place to stop at the top.
RA Dunk Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 As many runs as possible is ok with me (as long as im @ home) im pretty flexable as to where abouts as well anywhere is ok as long as its not too far away
pink pepper Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 what about going south east? Selkirk, Hawick, Galashiels area?? or more north west Fort william, fort augustus, kyle of lochalsh? If u pass fort william my mum will quite happily make everyone a cup of tea and a bacon roll (toilet break as well) to compete with the regular daily demand on us women i know that my mum uses octane booster and optimax in her hoover - she might do us a deal???
weeb Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 yeah, peebles, hawick area! central belt? we could do regular runs, monthly? bi monthly?
micra_wrc Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 i am also interested in feedback regarding the length of the run, eg are people happy driving for 300-400 miles round trip, spending £100+ on petrol and driving for 7-8 hours? yesterday may have been a wee bitty long and the early night/darkness made it feel a lot later than it was.
harry_hood Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 only complaints from the wife and bairn was lack of toilets, and hamburger vans lol
craig mac Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Grant Sorry about your hand mate Nice to meet you I know its a bit out of the way but the road from Dingwall up towards Ullapool and over to Aultbea is AWESOME Also up that way Dingwall then up over Loch Carron, Kishorn and up over Applecross!! Awesome These could be a 2 day trip idea for Summer time perhaps..... Food for thought? I have family in the hotel trade up that way so we could possibly get some deals on b&b etc? Craig
stuboo Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 The weekend run was a little long for this time of year but would be great for summer time as the darkness came in pretty quickly and we were only 2/3 of the way round. I would propose shorter runs in the winter months ie. 200 miles or so and leave the longer runs of 300/400 miles to the summer. But the run at the weekend was a great route and would jump at the chance to do that again. With regards to the East cost runs I think that there is a higher presance of athorities lurking round corners but I am up for almost any run. iawait your posts for the next one. Cheers
jcscoob Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 The last run there was great long but good, on the way back i could'nt see $h1t. And the toilet stops were ok for the men but pi$h for the women, as they were all closed ! A 2 day affair would be good to in the hight of the summer, a good drive, set up camp, barbecue, some beer and a fire, and a wee bit of a laff, then then the nxet day all home again sounds good to me.
Gumball Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 thats a good idea John. travelling somewhere staying for a beer and food then heading back the next day sounds nice.
Johnny50 Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 A big Scottish Scoobies camp would be a great idea !
RA Dunk Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 2 day drive would be the dogs bollocks..start way down south some place borders perhaps?? and work our way up the west coast theres loads of camping spots to pitch the tents up that way maybe up to john o groats then head south again .like JC says get the barbis oot , a few coldies (beers) and a night under the stars!
micra_wrc Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 << .... And the toilet stops were ok for the men but pi$h for the women, as they were all closed ! >> yeah, sorry about that. i realised they were shut when i ran out as soon as the car had stopped to use the toilet (had been dying to go for a while and squirrel's suspension doesnt help) and i was well miffed that they were closed. the route we did yesterday was carried over from when we did in back in May and the toilets were open then! i too am concerned about the availability of toilets for the ladies and try to make sure we include them during our rest breaks in the runs that we do. the bigger villages have public toilets in them, but I understand people's relunctance to stop the car to use the facilities when we are only passing through, in case they cant re-join the groups if they stop. feedback noted, keep the comments coming.
ScoobyAndy Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 A 2 day run would be very good Also I still have the route here for the run some of us did in October. More than willing to dust it off again anytime
jcscoob Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Imy, a plan -B- for the toilet stop would be good, IE pubs/hotels or something
sharon_mccall Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 The run was a wee bit too long yesterday. Need to invent a bottle of sorts for women to p in! I am really up for a two day thingy. Sounds magic. When we going??
RA Dunk Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 yea im sure we could put up with ya for that length of time lol could ya put up with us lot though??
craig mac Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Hey Hey Come on folks i thought it would be more thamn one day before we forgot what a great day that Gumball delivered yesterday, Let us reflect on the HUGE success that was before we start closing the curtains on yesterday Nice one to Chris and cant wait to see the photos in Scooby Mag Craig
the squiggle Posted November 22, 2005 Author Posted November 22, 2005 No curtain pulling going on here Just need to build a suitable crieria for future runs. Hand still hurts....... Grant

craig mac Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Sorry Grant It was just a good hearty Scots Northern Sheep Shaggers Hand Shake Craig
the squiggle Posted November 22, 2005 Author Posted November 22, 2005 and the softy southerner was paying the price this morning Grant
sharon_mccall Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 LOL Craig, you're a bloody big sheep shagger tho...........glad u were gentle wi me.
st3ph3n Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 I'd agree about the length yesterday for a Winters day, but then we did spend quite some time at Glenshee. I know even less about the south of the country than I do about the North. Totally different roads too I suppose. Might be nice for a bit of a mix and match. But just about anywhere is fine with me. That was my first run yesterday and I loved it.
