fai17 Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 I have the folowing questions. 1.What is this in the white circle? Is that threaded hole for the lamda sensor? As i run a GEMS ecu which doesn't use a lamda.Do i just tighten that bolt ,already in place,up? Will it come loose if i just tighten it up? 2.What is this in the red circle? Do i fit i bolt in it to blank it off? 3.Is this up pipe any good as i got sent it instead of a Helix up pipe? 4.Is this the right one to go with the Gruppe S headers i got from Flatfour to fit on to my STI 8 type UK Thanks for any reply before i wrap the whole thing.
mazheriqbal_mohammed Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 << Is this up pipe any good as i got sent it instead of a Helix up pipe? >> Not experience with the quality of existing up-pipes on the market, but from chatting to folk when i was thinking of replacing the headers i was adviced to consider going for an up-pipe that did not have any type of flexi joint on the piping due to the weave being much weaker than a solid pipe. I am unsure to what degree this is true but just what i been told, hope it is of some help to you. not got a clue about you other questions
MY94 Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 I was advised to get the Hayward and Scott up pipe.Up pipe with a double slip joint to allow for heat expansion. http://www.haywardandscott.com/Details.asp...147&category=13
the squiggle Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 White circle is for the Lambda sensor Red circle is for Exhaust gas Temp probe Never heard of a XSPower up pipe but have heard of a Helix one Put enough torque on it and it wont fall out
WUZ Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 Old GruppeS headers (MK I) used a 2-bolt fixing but were VERY prone to leaking at the flange. They upgraded the MK II headers to have a 3-bolt fixing between Headers and uppipe and so this won't work with the new ones (produced for the last 2 years!) Sorry! Russell ps unless you want big power (360+BHP), porting the OE headers and using them will work a treat.

The header and up pipe is brand new. What do i do next? 1. Do i take the feckers off and send them back to the supplers and tell him " they are pi$$" 2. Get someone to modify them and make them fit. 3. Sell the car. 4. Buy something else. 5. Can't think of anything else because i'm just so cheesed off. Help please.....fecking 2 bolt flanges are gash
fai17 Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 Why have i got the MK1 2 bolt flanges if i have just got these in the last month or so???????? Still pi$$ing my off just thinking about it.
WUZ Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Peter - I was trying to explain that there has been lots of problems with Gruppe-s and other aftermarket US headers that have the 2-bolt fixings for the downpipe. As they are made in Stainless Steel, there seems to be a problem with the flatness of the flange between headers and Uppipe. I've supplied 3 or 4 people up in Aberdeen the MK 1 Gruppe-s headers, fitted them (or helped) and I've covered my arse by useing 2 or 3 gaskets in that region and (touch wood!) I've not had a set leak yet! BUT BE WARNED! Use of Anti-lag on a cheap set of headers (I hate to say that Pete but, to be honest, that is what they are) with SERIOUSLY reduce their life (as well as the life of the turbo, etc) to be cautious! 2 options: 1 - use 2 (if not 3!) gaskets instead of 1 (common cure for 90% of the leaks on Gruppe-s MK1 headers) 2 - get the flange skimmed flat at a machine shop BUT DO BOTH UPPIP AND HEADERS! Option 1 is the cheaper and gets the results 95% of the time. Let me know if you need help as I have some people able to do this for you. ps - I used Gruppe-S as an example M8, I realise that you have XS Power headers but the problems are very similar!
fai17 Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 Thanks WUZ for the advice m8.It is Gruppe S header with XS power up pipe. 1. Where can i get the gaskets from? 2. If i need to take it to a machine shop how much would it cost? 3. How come i got the MK1 version when i only got them a month ago? Thanks once again for advice
WUZ Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Gruppe-S does the gaskets but just go for 3 of the compressable ones from Subaru for the Uppipe. Sounds to me like your supplier might have bought these in from the US about 18 months ago and still had that set in stock. I t happens. Machine shop should charge about 30-35 for A GOOD JOB! Russell ps - if your fitting them yourself try it first with the 2/3 gaskets, if it holds great, if it doesn't then take them off and put them to a machine shop!
higgy Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Hi Peter ive got the GT spec headers on my car and when i fitted them i was warned not to ovaetighten the bolts as you will distort the flang if over tightened. With the GT spec headers you get a three bolt flang and this is the beter option. hope you get it sorted ok. Higgy
fai17 Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 WUZ: the gasket that came off the original up pipe is off a different size.Is there a difference with the compreesable ones you are talking about. Had a good look at the up pipe earlier on i notice the bung that was used to fill in the EGT probe hole has blew to bits.It was a water temp sensor that was used which explain the leak So tomorrow i need to go to engineer shop to get a proper bolt. Do anyone know what the thread/size i need to get? Thanks
WUZ Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Callum - not quite! EGT probe is M12 X 1.25mm (Metric Fine) Lambda Boss is M18 X 1.5mm Russell
WUZ Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 With ref to the Uppipe gaskets, Gruppe-S supplied me a load last time I ordered some sets so I had spares in the garage.................but not any more (last set went out 3 weeks ago;() I believe there iS ONE AVAILABLE FROM A tRANSIT dIESEL THAT WILL FIT. RUSSELL
callum Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 DOH! Apologies for not reading the post properly A Metric Fine bolt will probably be difficult to find at any standard engineers merchants. Will probably be worth calling a few places first. I've also had the problem with two bolt flanges and after three attempts at grinding them flat, fitting new & varying quantities of gaskets I gave up. No matter what I tried it leaked by 1.8bar. Eventually gave up, cut the flanges off, made some three bolt ones and had them welded in place.
WUZ Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I have loads of spare M12 X 1.25 bolts in the garage (lots of these required on the scoob) Try Grampian Fasteners (do a google search) as my contact there now keeps loads in stock for me to buy from him! Russell
callum Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 That's useful to know. Just ordered some UNEF bolts from them and they seem fine to deal with. callum Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Peter, Did you manage to source an M12 bolt? Callum
fai17 Posted October 25, 2005 Author Posted October 25, 2005 << Peter, Did you manage to source an M12 bolt? Callum >> Yes. I got one from Greersport. It came off some engine part from a scooby. Just need to cut it down to fit Thanks m8
