ed-209 Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 As most of you know I got my car from motorpoint and it came with a pan euro warranty from the orginal Subaru dealer in Malta along with a copy of the original subaru sales invoice in my name. I have had the services done by subaru, and today I received a letter from Subaru UK saying the car has no warranty as it was sold against EU regulations, I called IM and spoke to Ian Pyke who says the car was mis-sold and has no warranty and never will have warranty because motorpoint acted as the agents in the sale even if I am marked down as the orginal purchaser from malta. Has any one had the same problem and what did you do to get round it. Or even what would you do now. Ed......Real worried...
st3ph3n Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK. I got my car from Motorpoint back in December last year, on the basis it came with a pan european warranty, which they assured me it did. Once I received the documentation from Liaco/Subaru Malta and Motorpoint I then registered the car with International Motors/Subuar UK. I have a letter from them confirming that they will acknowledge the warranty too. As far as I know the garages in the UK carry out the work under and then bill subaru malta for the costs. I fail to see why they'd have a problem with this as Subaru Malta have fully agreed to make good on these warranty claims. Hopefully there's no letter waiting for me when I get home.
Gumball Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 i think i asked you when we first met at the glasgow meet in June, July? if you knew that the warranty was very very basic. You said that it was covered. i fought like cat and dog to get my 54 plate wrx covered after it was miss sold to me by sherwood in east glasgow. eventually they did it and it was put on suburau Uk warranty. Motorpoint sell scoobs with "warranty". the problem is its some makeshift basic basic warranty where you in fact have to pay a fee after they pay the first X amount of money should anything go wrong !!!! not good. no way to change this hence the reason that the car was cheaper than a UK car by possible 3-4k?????? I dont know what to suggest but really if you bought a car from motorpoint with a warranty...all you can do is fight with them to get it put on. even if you have to pay them a fee it may be worth it as the car starts to get older. sorry mate, hope you get it sorted !!!
ed-209 Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 I have spoke to Motorpoint ( Glasgow ) who will take this up directly with IM as according to them there sould be no problem as the warranty terms don't stipulate who can or can't sell the vehicle as long as the warranty and service book is stamped and up to date. So I will give them a few days to get it sorted. I have check the booklet and it does not say anything to do with place of purchase. and it does say it is transfarable to new owners. I have also sent a email to liaco in Malta just to get there input. Ed More options wanted. ( I don't like to fire emtpy guns.)
st3ph3n Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Chris, your point is 100% right, up until Malta joined the EU. I looked at getting a WRX last june, but Motorpoint only provided a 1 year warranty with them. When I was in the financial postion to buy the car in December I went back to motorpoint to see if the situation had changed, fully expecting it hadn't. It was explained why they now offered the 3 year warranty as the car was sourced from the EU, and that IM/Subaru/everyone was OK with this. I had been going to use virgin cars or buyacar.co.uk or litchfields, but with motorpoint saying that, and them being literally 10 minutes away from my house I made the obvious choice of getting it with them. I've recommended them to a few people now, including my mate Rich who some of you met at knockhill. He bought a 54 plated WRX from them. I've had loads of PMs on scoobynet asking if I recommended them too, and I know 3 or 4 people for definite have bought cars based on my good opinion of them + other research they'd done. So this situation leaves me in a bit of a hole as most of my advice centred on "the warranty is fine".
ed-209 Posted October 14, 2005 Author Posted October 14, 2005 I've had a reply from Liaco in malta "Dear Mr. Reid, before I can comment, I would like to have a copy of both your communication and the reply to and from Subaru UK. I advise however that the Subaru vehicles are covered by a Pan-European Warranty and find it strange to learn of the reply from Mr. Pyke, however without viewing the full communications, I am not able to help you further. Kind regards, Romain Galea (Dip. Mngt, M.I.M) P & A Manager Liaco Limited Lia Buildings, Mosta Road, Lija BZN09 MALTA TEL: (+356) 2141 8111 ? FAX: (+356) 2141 8589 www.liaco.com.mt" So I have sent them a scanned copy of Subaru's letter hopfully this will get sorted quickly. Ed
st3ph3n Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 Ed, nothing in the post from Subaru or Motorpoint for me, or my mate, so maybe you're just a one off. Hope you get it sorted.
fai17 Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 Don't worry , you got your car cheap anyway. Not much can go wrong with scoobies. I spoke to G6RAY about this and he said. "he hasn't heard anything about this from Subaru UK. So if its a minor claim ie not engine ,he can probably do the warranty work. What happens is that they do a batch of warrant work then sends them to Subaru UK for a claim" Hope thats good news for you Ed.
billyboy Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 We have customers who have bought cars from Motorpoint and they too dont have any warranty because they are not registered on VW'S system. Also their isnt any corrosion warranty. Buyer Beware.
ed-209 Posted October 20, 2005 Author Posted October 20, 2005 Just a quick update. Got a phone call from Motorpoint regarding this letter it seems a few owners have received them and motorpoint wanted a copy of the letter to pass to the head office as it seems one of the directors is dealing with all of them as it could end up costing motorpoint a lot of money in refunding cars. As they would have been mis-sold and the contracts would need to be rescinded. Keeping my fingers cross very tighly now that I don't have to return it. Ed.
ed-209 Posted December 9, 2005 Author Posted December 9, 2005 Sorry to keep going on about this, but we have a result. I think Had a phone call from Motorpoint today. Good news and bad news. Bad news first... IM will not allow any warranty work on my car. This has now been confirmed by Motorpoint. Now the good news. Motorpoint ( insurance underwritten) will cover any warranty claims for the full three year as long as. a) I use a vat register garage or a Subaru Main agent garage. I use only Subaru approved parts in any repairs c) Serviced to the book. So I check a few points with them. They are covering the car to the exact spec of the pan-euro warranty. There are no limits to the claims or number of claims. There are sending me this in writing. It is transfarable. So I will be keeping mine now. as reading between the lines I think Motorpoint are going to pay for any repairs then claim them from Subaru malta ect. hence the approved parts ect. Much happier chappie now Ed
st3ph3n Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Great news Ed! I've still heard nothing about mine and I have a letter from Subaru saying it's covered. I think I will swap the plate over for a non motorpoint one though as I said the other day! Keep it on the DL.
terminator Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 There was an article about this in one of the car mags like drive this month.I'll let you know ra morra what mag.
doorman Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 alright ed,got my sti from motorpoint in july this year.just wondering if should contact them to find out what the situation is?
ed-209 Posted December 10, 2005 Author Posted December 10, 2005 I got mine end of june, you did register with subaru uk for the warranty?. Ed
ed-209 Posted December 10, 2005 Author Posted December 10, 2005 Well in about 4-6 weeks you will get a letter from a Mr Pike at Subaru UK telling you as you bought it from an unathorized seller you are new registered for warranty. Sorry mate, untill you get that letter you can't do anything. There are a couple of links at the start of this thread. Have a read. Ed
ed-209 Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 Got a letter from Subaru UK (IM) today, saying the car is now on the warranty database - so much for Iain Pyke saying it would never have a warranty. I suspect Fuji in Japan told IM to behave themselfs. That was after motorpoint gave me a written statment saying they would pickup the tab for any warranty work. So that would be an end of the story. One very happy chappie now Ed
st3ph3n Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Get with the times mate. You're a week behind in the whole debacle. Everything is fixed now. IM are accepting warranty work. We've all got letters confirming that now. We may well loose out on some things you talk about, but there's 4 grand in my back pocket keeping my bum cheeks warm.
andy Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Wheeee. You do what I did and put your order for a "UK specification" vehicle in writing at the time of order. You then screw the supplier to make it to UK spec as per your order (Cat 1 Thatcham, extra underseal etc) as they didn't meet your order spec. Then when they also f*** up on warranty book/details you screw them to provide a private warranty - for as long as I have the car. 40k, 60k, 80k, 100k. As long as I have the car I'm covered.
scoobyseller555 Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 i am keeping with the times mate....had email from subaru in the past few days suggest you go into your local dealer and get some details on it!Makes interesting reading...remember service as per the country of origin!
scoobyseller555 Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 where did you buy your car from andy?wouldnt like to be the man that has to cover that one..bet that made his eyes water
st3ph3n Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 If you read what Ed wrote then you'll see he's had a letter from Subaru UK this every morning confirming that he is ok to have his warranty work dealt with by UK dealers. There's been a 4 months long story about this which has only just been resolved, favourably I may add, by Subuaru UK after word came down from higher up that they were to honour them. There's a massive thread on SNET tracking the whole thing if you're interested.
andy Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 The story is somewhere in the archives here, but I took a three year PCP with a bunch of losers called Clark Autolease in Dunfermline with what I worked out to be a good final balloon payment. First move from hmmmm.....15 years of company cars. My order, in writing, was an Impreza WRX and clearly stated it would be "to UK Specification." Car was delivered - loved it. However, no manual or service book. Told they would follow (at this point didn't realise it was an import). At 800 miles I phoned them, advised I still had no service book, and asked if the car needed a 1000 mile service. I was told no, those days are long gone. The first service was due at 10,000. Passed 1000, still no book. Excuses galore from them. Got concerned as I used to work in the motor trade, albeit in IT, but had lots of demonstrators and all needed that 1000 mile service - even the lowly Skodas. Couldn't understand why such a high performance car didn't so phoned Subaru direct and was put right. Stroppy letters ensued threatening legal action as the car was not to the specification I ordered and, without a leg to stand on, they paid to bring it to UK Spec and offered unlimited warranty on it. Long story cut short.
